The Cumberland County Detention Center expansion is open and
in operation after the Board of Commissioners officially dedicated the
facility Feb. 3.
Construction started in September 2012 on the $15 million project
that adds 316 beds to the 568 in the existing Detention Center, which
opened in 2003 at 204 Gillespie St.
The project was designed by Moseley Architects and constructed by
Balfour Beatty and Metcon.
Cumberland County is accepting applications for its upcoming
Citizens' Academy running March 18-May 6. The academy is free
and held on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. at various county government
locations. There will not be a session on April 22 because of a regular
Board of Commissioners meeting that night.
The Citizens' Academy helps citizens gain a better understanding of
what county government does and how the various departments play a
vital role in the community.
You must be a Cumberland County resident to apply. The application
is available online at www.co.cumberland.nc.us. For more information,
please call 910-437-1921 or email sshutt@co.cumberland.nc.us.
