The table was decorated with colorful nap- kins and bright balloons. The guests were now seated at the table in anticipation of singing "Happy Birthday" to Jonathan on his first birthday. But where was Jonathan? They looked here and there but no Jonathan. Finally, you could hear Mary, Jonathan's l7 year old sister shouting with glee, "I've found him! I've found him!" Sure enough! There was Jonathan, sound asleep on the bed, cov- ered by the coats of those who came to honor him at his first birthday. Each Christmas we remem- ber the guest of honor, remem- brance that ought to span the Epiphany season that follows as well. It should be our num- ber one priority to remember in the midst of the preparations for Christmas that it is Jesus'coming to this earth as a little babe that we celebrate. For guidance as to how to celebrate the coming of this precious child, I would invite you to follow the example of those who celebrated at His first com- ing. Practice the rest of this year will guarantee a wonderful remembrance next time out. Consider the faith of Mary and Joseph. A faith that believed God's Word that the child conceived in her was of the Holy Spirit. He is the very Son of God. He is the One promised from of old. We need look no where else this Christmas for our source of joy or happiness than to this Child born of Mary. Consider the joy of the Angels who at His birth couldn't help but sing for joy. I know the Bible says they spoke to the Shepherds saying, "Glory to God in the Highest..." But speaking such an announcement must have sounded like singing. Be happy this Christmas! In spite of reasons to the contrary, everything is going to be OK. Our Savior has come. Take some time to reflect on the angel's message. Take some time to sing those Christmas Carols. Gather with those of like mind who know that one's joy is not dependent on today's feelings. Ponder the response of the Shepherds at having seen the Child lying in the manger. They went with haste to tell oth- ers of the wonder of His birth. One of the great ways to celebrate the Birth of Jesus is to speak to others con- cerning this Child. Use the opportunities to witness that abound during this time of the year. Send only such cards as point to the real meaning of Christmas. Invite friends to the various Christmas concerts and programs. Invite your neighbor to the Advent Ser- vices and the Christmas Can- dlelight service. Give your neighbor a gift of cookies in which is placed a Gospel tract. Write a letter to a missionary (we have addresses), thanking him for sharing the Gospel message with others. Consider the Wise Men who let nothing stop them from bending the knee and bowing the heart in the Name of Jesus. These pagan astrologers were so over- come with the good news of the Gospel they crossed a desert in winter to come and see for themselves, and worship Him they found. Don't let the business of this time distract you from the Lord's call to worship Him in special ways. From the helping of others to the singing of His praises to the gathering together in church we are invited to a banquet of glory. And like the Wise Men, we can offer Him our gold that others in faraway places may hear His Name. We gather our frankincense of prayer on behalf of others and the myrrh of our own self- sacrifice, our hearts to love Him, our hands to serve Him, our feet to run His errands, in short, our life in honor of Him who gave His Life for us. This year we want others to see Jesus. And we know that all our preparations and activities will but enhance our cele- brating His coming. I was sitting on the back porch sip- ping an ice-cold tea with a splash of lemon when I received a text from a rel- ative up north. I was enjoying a pleasant afternoon basking in the winter sun of Florida. Getting a text is a strange thing, or it can be. If I do not respond right away, I can always claim that there is "something wrong with my cell phone and my texting isn't working right today." Then I can get back to that relative whenever it suits me. Or, as the case with some relatives, and you know who I mean, I can ignore it. If you are a relative of mine and have not heard from me or had any of your text answered the simple answer is, I am not really ignoring you (ha ha ha) my cell phone is not working correctly. This relative that text me was com- plaining about how cold it was up north and even had the courtesy to send me a picture of their backyard just chock-full of some white substance known as snow. The text read, "I bet you wish you were here to enjoy this?" I think that relative would have lost that bet for sure. I love those snow scenes on postcards or in text messages like this one, but as to be personally involved with all of the frigid snow, do not bet on me! Cold, after all, is a relative thing espe- cially when the relatives are up north in the winter. Up north, they complain when the temperature falls below 30. Here in Florida I complain when the temperature falls below 70. Whenever the temperature dips below that magical 70, I have to break out one of my sweaters. What an inconvenience for me to have to put on a sweater because it is just a little bit cool on the outside. Then my relative sent me a picture of her standing in the snow looking like the abominable snowman. She had more clothes on than I actually own and have in my closet. I wonder how she walks around wearing all those clothes? How in the world does she ever sit down wearing all those clothes? And what about that thing wrapped around her head? We have hats here in Florida but not quite like the one she was wearing. It looked like she was wearing some igloo. Her invitation to come join her went completely unheeded by me. No relationship is quite like that rela- tionship that spans several hundred miles. You know the old saying, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." So, if you add distance to that absence you have the epitome of a wonderfully fond heart. Many things separate us from one another. Sometimes that separation is voluntary and sometimes it isn't. The apostle Paul understood that nothing could separate him from God. "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). It does not matter how cold it is out- side as long as inside there is a warm relationship with God bordering on fiery expectation. Rev. James L.
