In just the school’s second year of competing at the D-I level, the Cardi- nals took third place with 155.5 points, behind Chico (291) and Paradise (180.5). Foothill was fourth with 143.5 points and Red Bluff took an un-Spar- tans like fifth with 112.5 points. The Spartans qualified eight wrestlers for the section champi- onships, which take place Friday and Saturday in Redding and include Top 6 finishers from the Division I champi- onships. Red Bluff’s bright spot was once again Reid, who breezed through his weight class and knocked off Corn- ing’s Calvin Meister in the champi- onship. Corning’s Matt Boles took a sec- ond place finish falling to Chico’s Jesse Chambers in the 132-pound final. Red Bluff’s Cayetano Alcarez was fifth place in the division. The Cardinals had a second runner- up in the 217-pound division in Erik Miranda, who lost to Chico’s Mark Jorgenson in the final. Red Bluff’s Jeff Skaggs was fifth. Dan St. John and Bryce Eggert had the Spartans best finishes outside of Reid. St. John was third at 114 pounds. Corning’s Martin Solano was fifth. Nationally-ranked Nashon Garrett from Chico won the division. Eggert was third at 173 pounds, a title won by Paradise’s Calem Fiolka. Corning’s Parker Johnson placed fifth. The Cardinals had a third place fin- isher at 121 pounds in Nathan Fultz. Other weight classes: 105 — Foothill’s Jaxon Fitzgerald won the division. Corning’s Elias Vallejo was fifth. 127 — Red Bluff’s Dalton Gutier- rez was fifth and Corning’s David Edson was sixth in a weight class won by Chico’s Efren Rodriguez. 137 — Paradise’s Nick Morelli defended his title. Corning’s Sean Lowe was sixth. 142 — Chico’s Pang Lee won the division. Red Bluff’s Eric Anderson was fifth and Corning’s Ramon Lopez was sixth. 147 — Red Bluff’s Kyle Case was fourth and Corning’s Dominic Azeve- do was sixth. Foothill’s Chase Boontjer won the title. 154 — Paradise’s Jason Powell was champion with Corning’s Raul Espinoza placing sixth. 191 — Corning’s Daniel Welborn tied for fifth. Chico’s Ross Longnecker was champion. 287 — Chico’s Mike Davis won the weight class. Fortunately for him, it didn’t happen until he missed the turn pulling into Victory Lane at the Daytona 500. The youngest driver to win the Great American Race gave the historic Wood Brothers team its fifth Daytona 500 victory — its first since 1976 with David Pearson — and Bayne did it in a No. 21 Ford that was retrofitted to resem- ble Pearson’s famed ride.
