The Tehama County Young Marines of Marine Corps League, Detachment 1140, Tehama/Red Bluff, were chartered in October, 2005 and have since been the recipients of more awards than any other unit in such a short time period since 1959. The awards include being named the 2009 recipients of the presti- gious Fulcrum Shield - an award for youth drug demand reduction edu- cation for youth organi- zations with a military affiliation presented by the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. They are currently the number one unit in the nation. Two Young Marines from the unit have also been named winners of the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship - an award that only one male and one female in the nation each year are chosen for. Two young ladies, Annie Bennett and Mary Hurton, from this unit have been the winners for the last two years. Retired Master Sergeant Bennett went to Guam and Iwo Jima last year and Young Marine Mas- ter Sergeant Hurton is going to these locations in March. Both of these young ladies and former Young Marine Sierra Bledsoe have been to the United Nations in New York as special representatives for the committee on violence against women world- The program's mis- sion includes educating the youth in Tehama County about the dan- gers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, abuse, bully- ing, gangs and violence - helping the youth with their school work and being committed to strengthening the com- munity through service. The unit has also received a special proclamation from the State Assembly through Jim Nielsen and have also received a special proclamation from the California Sheriffs Association, through Sheriff Clay Parker, both naming the unit as the leaders in youth drug demand reduction education in the state.
