2014: Year of the
Whimsical Dogwoods
City and Fort Bragg Partner for Inaugural All American
Marathon, Mike-to-Mike Half Marathon
Downtown Fayetteville will play host in 2014 to
an array of public art pieces with help from a grant
from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland
County. From April to September, visitors and
guests will be able to view Whimsical Dogwoods,
individually painted by local artists, installed around
Downtown Fayetteville.
These Whimsical Dogwoods will be mapped on a
walkable tour and will include interactive features,
such as QR codes, and programming like
scavenger hunts, meet the artists night during 4th
Friday and contests to get everyone engaged.
This project is designed to increase tourism in
Fayetteville and Cumberland County, particularly in
Downtown Fayetteville; to increase visibility of
museums and parks, as well as side streets and
more; to showcase our local artists in a highly
visible and creative way; to unify our community;
and to raise money for downtown revitalization.
The All-American Marathon and Mike-to-Mike Half Marathon, a partnership between the City and Fort
Bragg, will be held May 4, 2014. The event will start in downtown Fayetteville at Festival Park, a four acre
concert/entertainment complex. Racers will run up Ray Avenue to Hay Street, where they will run through the
heart of historic downtown Fayetteville past the Market House. The route will then take runners up past the
N.C. Veterans Park and the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, which is the home to the historic Iron
Mike Statue.
