Burning Up the Ice: FireAntz
Come On Strong in 2014
by JASON FLEMING
The FireAntz begin
2014 as one of the hottest
teams in the Southern
Professional Hockey
League. After a slow start
to the season the team has
gone 10-4-2 in their last 16
games, vaulting them up in
the standings.
Recently acquired
forward Matt Smyth has
been spectacular for the
FireAntz, averaging over
one point per game. He has
tallied nine points in eight
games scoring five goals
and adding four assists.
Goaltender Peter
Skoggard has also been
tremendous, between the
pipes, for the FireAntz. He
has a sparkling record of
4-1-2 with a 1.83 goals
against average and a .940

those numbers mean that
he's giving up less than two
goals per game and teams are scoring on about one in every 20 shots on goal.
Another bright light for the FireAntz has been left winger Brett Liscomb. He
is tied with Smyth for most points on the season. Liscomb has five goals, nine
assists and 14 points in 19 games played this year.
The FireAntz look to continue their hot play as they begin 2014. With home
games this weekend, Friday and Saturday, they will face off against the Pensacola
Ice Flyers. Friday, January 10th is Race Night, with a lot of really cool race cars
for fans to check out.
The next home game, Saturday the 11th, is the FireAntz annual Ladies' Night
brought to you by Highland OB/GYN, Hope Mills Glass, Owens and Bordeaux
Florist and Stanley Steemer. It has always been one of the most anticipated
games of the season and this year is no different. The team will wear specialty
pink jerseys that they will auction off to fans after the game. The purpose is also
to raise awareness for the Cape Fear Valley Breast Cancer Center and the services
they provide.
The FireAntz have three other home games in January for fans to enjoy at
the Crown Coliseum. Thursday, Jan. 16 they host the rival Knoxville Ice Bears.
The next night, Friday, Jan. 17, the rivalry theme continues as the Columbus
Cottonmouths invade the Crown. Plan for a lot of retro music and a fun time
for all! The last home game in January is Monday, Jan. 20, as the FireAntz host
"Public Safety and Scout Night."
January is packed with excitement for the FireAntz and their
fans. Make sure to come out to all of the home games and don't
forget to check the Meet
'N Greet Schedule on the
