CUMBERLAND Risacher Named Library Director of Year Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center Director Jody Risacher has been named Library Director of the Year by the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association (NCPLDA). Risacher received the award at the association's meeting in December. Risacher has been the library director since 2008. She was hired as the library's deputy director in 1998. Risacher earned a Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. 'The Returned' Author To Speak at Library As part of the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting and Author Event, author Jason Mott will be at Headquarters Library Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Mott will discuss his debut novel "The Returned," which tells the haunting story of the world turned upside down when the departed come back from death, bringing joy and agony to those they left behind. Board Honors Outstanding Young Farmer The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners honored 2013 Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farmer Ryan Kennedy at the Dec. 16 regular board meeting. Kennedy is a fifth-generation farmer who graduated from Gray's Creek High School. Kennedy graduated from the N.C. State University with a degree in ornamentals and landscape technology. Baby Store Returns to Health Department The Baby Store at the Cumberland County Department of Public Health is back in operation after it closed three years ago. The store opened Jan. 6 and is located in suite 2200, on the second floor of the Health Department at 1235 Ramsey St. Normal operating hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Baby Store Project was founded in 2010, but was forced to close in 2011 because funding ended. The Health Department received a $5,000 grant last year from the Dr. Ann F. Wolfe Endowment for Child Health and Infant Mortality to help re-open the store. The Baby Store is an incentive program that awards "Baby Bucks" to patients who attend scheduled clinic appointments and participate in educational programs to reduce infant mortality and increase safe parenting. The store will primarily serve low-income clients ages 18 to 44 living in Cumberland County. The Health Education, Maternity Clinic, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Services sections will distribute the bucks, and patients can redeem them in the store for items such as diapers, bottles, bibs, pacifiers, lotions, powder, diaper bag, clothing and safety gear.
