COMMUNITY NEWS Fort Bragg Tax Center to Open Jan. 22 The Fort Bragg Tax Center, located in the Soldier Support Center in building 4-2843 off Normandy Drive, will open Jan. 22, 2014, and be open through May 30. Tax services will be available throughout the year for those returning military service members from deployment. The Tax Center has changed the operating hours this year and will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, closed Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays and open until midnight April 15th. The Fort Bragg Tax Center is the largest in the Army. It serves active duty military, family members, and retirees with virtually all of their personal tax needs. The Tax Center provides free tax preparation, electronic filing, and tax form distribution for federal and all state tax returns. Soldiers, civilian employees and civilian volunteers will assist tax payers with all their tax needs. These Soldiers and volunteers have completed the Internal Revenue Services' training program and are IRS certified to prepare tax returns. Assistance is provided by appointment or walk-in basis. Appointments are strongly recommended and can be made by calling the tax center at 910-3961040/8299. Walk-in clients must arrive at least 1 hour prior to closing. In order to have returns prepared, taxpayers must: (1) Arrive at the Tax Center not later than one hour prior to closing. (2) Bring their W2 forms, which can be downloaded from the DFAS MyPay website at https://mypay.dfas.mil. A copy of an LES cannot be used. (3) Bring their military/dependent/retiree ID card. (4) Bring a current Power of Attorney if filing for another person or filing married without your spouse present and any tax forms they have received in the mail. (5) If taxpayers want to get their refund faster by direct deposit, they must also bring a routing number and account number. During 2013, the tax center served more than 25,000 service members, retirees and their family members; prepared more than 18,000 returns, and saved clients approximately $3.5 million in tax preparation fees. Designed to protect and enhance our environment, the program encourages Fayetteville residents to recycle their live Christmas trees and since 1994, has kept thousands of pounds of recyclable material out of our landfills. The City of Fayetteville annually collects the trees from city residents and PWC and DEP volunteers grind them up into mulch used on woodland paths at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden and community parks. The annual event will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Fayetteville city residents can put their trees out for curbside collection by Monday, January 6, 2014. The City will make special pickups Jan. 6-10, pickups are separate from yard waste, trash or recycle pickups. All lights, stands and trimmings should be removed from your tree. If you live outside the City or miss the pickup, you may drop your tree at the Botanical Garden (Hwy 301 North) any day before January 11. The garden entrance is accessible even though multiple bridge replacement projects on Hwy 301S are in progress. The Grinding of the Greens begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Botanical Garden on January 11.
