4A – Daily News – Thursday, January 20, 2011 Pastimes The North State Symphony will perform its first concerts of 2011, Beauty Rising, at 7:30 p.m. Satur- day, Feb. 19, at Redding’s Cascade Theatre, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Chico’s Laxson Auditorium. Beauty Rising will feature clas- sical and neo-classical works. Molly Mahoney, vocalist, and Anthoni Polcari, cellist, winners of the Symphony's 2010 Young Artist Audition contest, will both perform. “Classical music is what we do, but in this case the word 'classical' refers to the 18th Century, the era of Haydn and Mozart,” said conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett. “Neo-classical is the word we use when a later composer is inspired by classical style. It's all about beautiful, lively music and some beautiful thoughts and images that go along with it.” Mahoney, first place winner in the College/University Division of the 2010 NSS Young Artist Audi- tions, is a mezzo-soprano who grew up in Chico. She is a graduate of CSU, Chico and received her MA in vocal performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2010. Redding's Anthoni Polcari, who placed first in the High School competition, will perform the first movement of Haydn's charming C Major Cello concerto. Polcari has been playing the cello for 16 years. He has per- formed with the All State Sympho- ny Orchestra — for advanced high school players from around Califor- Mahoney nia — and served as principal cello of the Interlochen Philharmonic in 2009. The title of the concert, Beauty Rising, comes from the Respighi's work, Botticelli Pictures. Botticelli Pictures was inspired by Botticelli’s famous iconic paintings, including Venus Rising, which shows the goddess Venus rising from the sea. The painting Venus Rising, which inspired Respighi's music, is reproduced on the symphony's con- cert posters and website, www.northstatesymphony.org. Adult tickets for the concerts begin at $20 for economy seats, and general tickets are $27. Premium tickets are $48 in Redding, $32 in Chico. Student and senior ticket Polcari prices are available for both con- certs. Purchase tickets for the Redding performance at the Cascade Theatre Box Office, 243-8877. For the Chico concert, tickets are sold at the University Box Office, 898-6333. The Redding concert is spon- sored by Dr. Pamela Ikuta and Dr. Jeff Price, and the Chico concert is sponsored by Rabobank. Other con- cert sponsors include CSU, Chico’s Department of Music and School of the Arts. After Chico's concert, the audi- ence is invited to extend the day with the symphony at Monks Wine Lounge. A special wine tasting and appetizer fundraiser will be held to benefit the North State Symphony. The Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, as a part of the National Park Service’s Artist-in-residence program is seeking professional artists working in pho- tography, sculpture and painting to apply to participate in the 2011 residency program. Selected artists will have the opportunity to spend up to three weeks in an artists’ cabin at Whiskeytown to produce new works inspired by the park’s diverse nat- ural and cultural resources. Prospective artists will gain inspiration by exploring and interpreting this special landscape; the forested slopes of Shasta Bally Mountain, surrounding oak woodlands, majestic waterfalls and the clear blue waters of Whiskeytown Lake. In exchange for their stay, artists will be asked to give a public presentation and donate a piece of art reflective of their time at Whiskeytown National Recre- ation Area. For more information call Sheila Edridge at 246-1225. Large scale silk screens When CSU, Chico Turner Print Museum curator Catherine Sullivan said the print museum’s first exhibi- tion of 2011 would be “big, really big” she wasn’t exag- gerating. Most works for “Splash: Large Scale Screen Prints” will be of the large variety – a minimum 2-feet wide by almost 3-feet tall. Presented Jan. 24 through Feb. 18, “Splash” will feature large-scale screen-printed serigraphy works by Salvador Dali, Robert Motherwell, David Salle, Kenneth Martin, Richard Hamilton, Patrick Caulfield, Clayton Pond, Peggy Garbutt, Andy Warhol, and Roger Shimomura. The works – culled from Courtesy photo The Turner’s 3,000-plus print collection – will cover a broad range of subjects, everything from the iconic Campbell’s soup can by Warhol to anthropomorphic nar- ratives by Garbutt. Sullivan will give a curator’s talk Thursday, January 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the museum with a reception to follow. Her talk will touch on the nature of scale, the relation- ship/connection the British artists represented in the show had with Warhol, as well as the silk screen’s use of color in form and composition. “This exhibition has a broad spectrum of 20th centu- ry art concepts represented – everything from abstraction to minimalism,” noted Sullivan. “It gives a glimpse at the shifting aesthetic and the individual artistic voice that characterized 20th century art. It is also one exhibition tied to printmaking curriculum as student printmakers at CSU, Chico will be exploring contemporary printmak- ing as the museum gallery displays its modern history.” This exhibition will be of particular interest to any- one curious about print works that use large areas of color, as well as people interested in the delineation of form by color; color theory; image scale; visual percep- tion; and/or seeing graphic work by artists -- Dali, Moth- erwell -- who might be best known as painters. She said “Splash” would also dispel the notion that in these modern times serigraphy is becoming a forgotten art form. Silk screening, which can trace its roots back to ancient China, still enjoys vast popularity thanks to artists having easy access to the tools needed to create serigraphic works. Clayton’s Pond’s “Inverticornerum Squaredoromic. As a commercial process, screen- printing is still familiar today with the tee shirt, gift card and posters, which only adds to its availability as an art form. “As an artistic medium it is still a viable and vital printmaking technique whose effect can differ from other printmaking techniques such as etching.” The Turner Print Museum is located in Meriam Library on the CSU, Chico campus. Hours are 11-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call Sullivan at 898-4476 or email csul- livan@exchange.csuchico.edu to arrange for viewing by large groups and outside regular hours. Adobe Rd.
