4A Daily News – Friday, December 20, 2013 Education in Tehama County Students travel to see Silent Sleigh KEEP ON LEARNING Exchange names students of the month Nine Tehama County students traveled to Carmichael for the 22nd annual Silent Sleigh event, accompanied by teachers Margie McGrew and Jeanie Swanson, in addition to several interpreters, including Cathy Wilson. This was an event for deaf students. All of the activities and speakers were signing. Elementary students had fun activities and crafts, including decorating cookies and Christmas trees, balloon animals and coloring pages. The high school had group games, cookie decorating and college and university reps who signed and could answer questions directly. Students could have their picture taken with a Santa, who could communicate with the children in American Sign Language. Three groups performed Christmas songs in American Sign Language. Two groups were deaf and one group was a high school class learning American Sign Language. Students were able to meet other deaf children and some connected with friends from their summer deaf camp, Camp Grizzly. Students of the month from West Street Elementary School and Corning High were honored by the Corning Exchange Club on Wednesday, Dec. 11. A Senior from Centennial High School was sick with the flu and will be recognized in January. Doran Walters, West Street Elementary sixthgrader, was introduced by his teacher Theodore Omler who explained why Doran was selected as West Street's student of the month. Doran was described as a leader in his class who is extremely helpful in the classroom. Doran is active in Corning Little League and enjoys skateboarding, and wants to go on to college following high school. Nicholas Hoag, Corning High senior, was introduced by his teacher Mr. Wilkins who heaped high praise on Nicholas as a student, athlete and school leader. Nicholas is a star basketball player in addition to playing base- Tehama District Jr. Livestock Annual Meeting Thurs., Jan 16th 6pm held in the Tehama Ro om @ Tehama Distric t Fairgrounds ball, and is a member of the California Scholarship Federation. Outside of school he is active in AAU basketball, Rotary Basketball as a referee and coach. His hobbies include reading, music, video games, working out, and hanging with friends. He intends to go to Oregon State, or a college that lets him play basketball, and will major in history, government and economics. The Corning Exchange Club presented each student with a certificate recognizing them as a Student of the Month along with an engraved pen and pencil set. Senior Students of the Month are placed into the pool of nine students of the month from their respective high schools for a one in nine chance to receive a scholarship from the Club. The Club members praised the teachers and parents in attendance for raising and mentoring these fine young students.
