CUMBERLAND Two Inducted Into Agricultural Hall of Fame Council Appointed To Lead Commissioners A retired soil conservationist and a former Cooperative Extension Director were inducted into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame on Nov. 22 during the annual Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville Farm City Week program. A World War II veteran and N.C. State University graduate, he worked for 34 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. He was the Cumberland County District Conservationist for 18 years until he retired in 1986. Retired Cumberland County Extension Director George Autry began his career with N.C. Cooperative Extension in 1976 after graduating from N.C. State University. He worked two years as an agent in Halifax County then transferred to Cumberland County in 1978. He became the county's extension director in 1985, a job he held until he retired in 2009. Ryan Kennedy of Gray's Creek was named the 2013 Cumberland County Farm Bureau Young Farmer of the Year. Kennedy, a graduate of Gray's Creek High School, is a fifth-generation farmer. Jeannette Council was appointed chairman and Kenneth Edge vice chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners for 2014. The new leadership was appointed by acclamation at the regular board meeting held Dec. 2 in the Courthouse. Council served as vice chairman for 2013. She presented outgoing Chairman Jimmy Keefe with a gavel and plaque in recognition of his service. Council was first elected to the Chairman Jeannette Council, board of commissioners in 2000 and right, presents a gavel and plaque to outgoing Chairman is serving as chairman for the third Jimmy Keefe at the Board time. She is President-Elect of the Women of NACo (National Association of Commissioners meeting Dec. 2. of Counties). Council was elected to the N. C. Association of County Commissioners' Board of Directors and was elected in 2012 and 2013 to serve a one-year term as an at-large director. Low-Income Energy Assistance Available Eligible citizens interested in receiving help with their heating costs during the winter can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). Priority will be given to households with an elderly member age 60 and above, or a disabled person receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services. Applications for these priority households will be accepted through Jan. 31 or until funds are exhausted. Applications for all other households will be accepted Feb. 3- March 31 or until funds are exhausted.
