INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Well, last Monday marked Up & Coming Weekly’s 16th year as Fayetteville and Cumberland County’s community newspaper. Whew, we’re just glad to be here! And, like thousands of other Cumberland County residents, I started the new year out at the Crown Center eating black-eyed peas and bar-b-que. What a wonderful Cumberland County tradition Register of Deeds Lee Warren and (former) District Attorney Ed Grannis present each year free to the entire community. 2011 marked their 18th year. Adding to the excitement and enjoyment this year was the recognition of Ed Grannis’ 35 years of service, dedication and leadership as district attorney. That afternoon he passed those responsibilities to his protégé of 10 years, Assistant District Attorney Billy West — talk about perfect New Year timing. Out with the old and in with the new. However, Grannis is not that old and West is not really new. Young, hardworking and enthusiastic Billy West knows and understands the challenges he will face following in Grannis’ Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast January 7 Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Thursday January 6 Saturday January 8 footsteps. This added much to the New Year’s Day festive occasion as dozens of civic and political leaders shook hands and visited with their local constituents. Almost everyone was optimistic and excited about the new year. Even though the event resembled a political love fest, I am proud that people like Lee Warren and Ed Grannis take on the responsibility to say thank you to Cumberland County residents by keeping this local Cumberland County tradition alive. And, even though our newly installed District Attorney Billy West will be busy with his new duties and responsibilities, I’m sure planning next years black-eyed pea tradition will be a priority. Best wishes and Happy New Year! from everyone here at Up & Coming Weekly and thank you for reading. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? edi- tor@upandcomingweekly.com.
