Daily News file photos Football Chance Nelson Girls Golf Sofia Frantz Corning High junior Chance Nelson was the definition of dependable this season for the Cardinals, which earned a Northern Section CIF playoff berth after missing the postseason last year. Nelson totaled 973 rushing yards on the season and notched 11 touchdowns. In a 31-6 win over Oroville on Sept. 13, Nelson had a special night. He rushed for 17 yards and scored three touchdowns. Honorable Mentions: Alex Davila, Chayce Maday, Thomas Lowe, CORNING; Christian Shaffer, Justin Nunez, Logan LeVier, Greg Dufour RED BLUFF, Alejandro Guerrero, Tommy Garcia, MERCY. Boys Swimmer Curtis Twitchell Red Bluff High junior Sofia Frantz sank another solid year for the Lady Spartans golf team, finishing with All-Eastern Athletic League honors. Frantz finished league play with an average score of 48.125, which was good for sixth place overall. She led a strong Spartans team to a second-place finish in league. Honorable Mentions: Summer Frantz, Autumn Poole, Michelle Mitchell, Yazmin Villalobos, RED BLUFF Girls Swimmer Julia Brandt Red Bluff High's Curtis Twitchell made a splash at the Northern Section CIF Division I Championships on Oct. 31, finishing first in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Free with times of 22.81 seconds and 50.31 seconds, respectively. He also aided in second place finish in the 400-yard Free Relay, and a third place finish in the 200-yard Free Relay. The Spartans finished third as a team. Honorable Mentions: Josh Jackson, Zach Fisher, Jordan Johnson, Owen Ritter, Mitchell Sauve, Noah Caylor, Nick Vallarreal, RED BLUFF Both a cross country and track and field threat, Corning High's Rogelio Silva finished sixth at the Northern Section CIF Cross Country Championships on Nov. 14. In the 3-mile varsity run, Silva notched a time of 16:37.23 for the Cards. Silva earned first place times in the 3-mile run at the Las Plumas Invitational and Clam Beach Invite earlier in the season, finishing at 16:15 and 16:31, respectively. His record for the event this season was 15:41.05. Honorable Mentions: Durante Rodriguez, Eduardo Blancas, CORNING; Aza Bravo, Martin Hernandez, RED BLUFF Ginger Shaffer Red Bluff High's Ginger Shaffer led a special team that had a special season. The Lady Spartans finished its year undefeated, going 12-0 in Sac River League play. Shaffer anchored the team as its No. 1 singles player, and earned an individual league championship of her own in the process. Honorable Mentions: Elle Davis, Monique Davis, Monica Curiel, Rebecca Skousen, CORNING; Aislynn Lair, Josie Clements, Erika Ellis, Emmaline Iverson, Victoria Yates, Tina Ortega, Riley DuFrain, RED BLUFF. Girls Volleyball Clarivel Castillo Red Bluff High School freshman Julia Brandt at the Northern Section CIF Division I Championships placed third in the 100-yard Breaststroke and 100-yard Butterfly, finishing with times of 1:15.57 and 1:04.00, respectively. Brandt also helped the 200-yard Freestyle Relay team to a fourth place finish. The Lady Spartans placed fourth overall. Los Molinos High's girls volleyball team lived up to its name this season. After a strong showing last year, the Lady Bulldogs fought their way back to Northern Section CIF championship match, and won. Clarivel Castillo, with her commanding kills, was a big part of the team's remarkable success. The 6-foot-0 Castillo finished the year with 642 kills, 632 digs and 102 blocks. Honorable Mentions: Nicole Sauve, Samara Robinson, Haley Rosser, Amy Shoff, Jullian Strom, Mayson Trujillo, Sosie O'Sullivan, Jolene Donaldson, RED BLUFF Honorable Mentions: Kaitlyn Seaman, Katie Morgan, Emily Bailey, Dom Henderson, LOS MOLINOS; Jessica Curl, Breana Kemp, Marissa Starman, Michelle Jaramillo, MERCY, Kaylee Shoemaker, Miranda Kremer, Mariah Schromm, Emerie Eller, CORNING Boys and Girls Cross Country Rogelio Silva Girls Tennis Naomi Renfroe Red Bluff High's Naomi Renfroe had the Spartans' top finish at the Northern Section CIF Cross Country Championships, finishing the 3-mile event with a time of 21:58.53. The freshman's record for the event is 21:55, which was achieved Sept. 11 against Corning and Oroville. The time was good for first place. Renfroe earned high placements throughout the year. She finished third in the 1.9-mile run at the Sac River League Championships with a time of 12:55, and had second-place finishes against Corning and at the SRL Center Meet. Honorable Mentions: Tiffany Rodriguez, CORNING; Nicole Renfroe, Kayla Exum, Claire Lester, Adrienne Hinkston, RED BLUFF Girls Field Hockey Bailey Jennings Corning High's Bailey Jennings, recognized as one of the Lady Cardinals best offensive players, also earned Eastern Athletic League All League honors for her play this season.
