Longhorns Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Major Applewhite congratulated Bauer. Eleven Texas cities have Longhorn Clubs, which are booster groups supporting U.T. athletics through the Longhorn Foundation. D Texas Pikes Making History, Making a Difference r. G. Thomas Shires Jr. '42 (1925-2007) was chief of surgery at Dallas' Parkland Hospital in 1963. On November 22 of that year, Dr. Shires was attending a conference in Galveston and, after being flown to Dallas by a state plane, scrubbed in at 3:00 p.m. (two and a half hours after President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot) to join the surgical team that resuscitated the seriously wounded Governor John Connally. Two days later, Dr. Shires personally led the trauma team that attempted in vain to save the presidential assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. at the time of his death, was director of the University of Nevada Medical School's Trauma Institute. Dr. Shires served as president of the American Surgical Association (1979–80), American College of Surgeons (1981–82) and the US Chapter of the International Society of Surgery (1984–85). In his later career Dr. Shires served as dean of Cornell Medical School, chaired the surgery department at Texas Tech Health Science Center and, With this issue The Beta Mu Review introduces a new alumni feature, Texas Pikes Making History, Making a Difference. Two of Dr. Shires' grandsons were Pikes. Austin Shires '08, like his grandfather was a Beta Mu initiate. During his Beta Mu days, Austin was pledge class president, rush chairman, external vice president, IFC chief justice, Texas Cowboy Cannon Crew member and a business honors graduate of McCombs School of Business. Austin is now A Waco native and graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Dr. Shires was initiated into Parkland Hospital Chief of Surgery Dr. Tom employed with ExxonMobil in Dallas. Austin's older brother was a Pike at George Washington Pi Kappa Alpha at U.T. Austin where he graduated Shires '42 speaking before the media on in 1944, before completing medical studies at U.T.
