MU NEWS 2 Alumna Finds Work and Fun for a Lifetime in Chi Omega rying to find the right fit while going through recruitment can be an overwhelming process, but Chi Omega proved to be the best place for Dee Pearce '63. "The Chi Omega members were easy to talk to, top in scholarship, beautiful, and polished. I still hadn't made up my mind on the last day of recruitment, but when I heard the Symphony it sold me; I knew I wanted to be a Chi Omega." T Dee has many special memories from her undergraduate years, but a standout was "singing with the chapter and a fraternity in an all-Greek competition in the Greek Theater for Spring Sing." There were also several alumnae who had a positive impact on her experience. "Sis Collins '31 was a Bear who bled blue and loved and served Chi Omega her whole life. She was a great lady and a model for me." Dee earned her bachelor's degree in art history. After graduation she began working as a recreation therapist in inpatient psychiatry at a local teaching hospital. She decided to go back to school to earn degrees in healthcare administration and an MBA. She spent her career as an executive in health care, consulting to health care executives in operations improvements and the design and implementation of information systems. She has since retired. In her retirement she has volunteered her time to Chi Omega. "When I retired I was afraid I'd have nothing to do, so I accepted a position with Chi Omega as a national volunteer and serve as the west region alumnae director for Chi Omega." Throughout her life, Dee has stayed connected to Chi Omega. "Four years out of school, a pledge sister Marilyn Ageno Dreyfus '63, who was advising the chapter, asked if I would help her. It was 1971 and the Greek system at Berkeley and the chapter had fallen on horrible times. She was the lone advisor and Chi O was struggling with only 29 members living in the house. I joined her and have been advising ever since. Now, half a century after I was first there, the chapter is still flourishing. They get more and more amazing every year. If they are our future, then the future is going to be great!" Dee has also maintained close relationships with other sisters. "It is interesting now that my group is retired we are seeing more of each other than ever. I can meet people I haven't seen for 40 years and it is as if it were yesterday." Dee's husband, Russ, is a fellow Berkeleyan whom she met at Cody's Book Store on Telegraph in the "Summer of Love." They live in Orinda, California. Their son, David, lives with his wife, Jen, and their children, Tristan and Vivian, in Kentfield. E-mail Dee at rhp3@msn.com.
