ALPHA DELTA ADDS SERVICES AND INCENTIVES TO ENCOURAGE SUCCESS T he Alpha Delta Chapter has seen a big change in our scholarships. Here's what the HCB has helped finance for the chapter: • The HCB has built a super silent study area and added six new computers. We were able to donate our old computers to the Delta Nu Chapter in Springfield, Missouri, for their new house that opened this fall. We also donated another computer to the local Girls on the Run organization. This is the official philanthropy organization for Gamma Phi Beta International.  • The chapter also has a good amount of their tests and study materials on a backup drive and is working to make them accessible online. Thanks to Lauren Mackay '11, chapter scholarship chairman, and her assistant, Kaitlyn Patterson '11, who have spent countless hours over the summer scanning all the documents.  • Lauren and Kaitlyn are busy setting up the first ever Alpha Delta Scholarship website. Only Alpha Deltas will be able to use this website to help them with their different majors. Thanks to the HCB for financing the website each year. Lauren reported that she found few other fraternities and sororities providing this service to their members. The Scholarship Committee is hoping to have the website up and running for the spring semester. Once again Alpha Delta leads the way! • In addition to that, the Alpha Delta Chapter has many incentives to push its members to achieve academically. One popular incentive is The Smarty Panties Award. At every chapter, members are encouraged to bring in any A's they have received on tests and papers to enter a drawing for a free pair of Victoria Secret underwear.  The scholarship program has been rewarding members who have been accepted into their programs with Starbucks gift cards. Alpha Delta is proud to have many members achieve academic success by being accepted into programs such as nursing, speech pathology, and physical therapy—all very competitive programs at Mizzou! Please feel free to pass along any incentive gift cards for our scholarship use. You can contact Lauren Mackay at lmm8vb@mail.missouri.edu. "I reallyknew she wanted toofbethea Cynthia Marlen Gasper '72 part of liked the energy Gamma Phis, and the house was beautiful. When I joined, I was proud to be a part of such a good organization that was well respected on campus and across the country." Cynthia has many great memories from her time at Mizzou. "We always had so much fun, whether it was at parties, candlelights, or serenades. One of the most memorable moments was in the spring of 1974, which was when the fraternities started streaking down Richmond Avenue. I brought my horse when I came to the university, and one of the fraternity members asked to borrow it. It was quite a sight to see him streaking on the back of my horse. It was also photographed and published in Newsweek Magazine." She also had moments of disappointment that her Alpha Delta sisters helped her through. "When I came to Mizzou I wanted to be a lawyer. I remember visiting with an advisor at the school of law to make sure that I was on track to be admitted and she told me, 'You can't be a lawyer, you're a girl, and admission to the school would be next to impossible.' I was devastated, but it was my pledge mom, who was a senior in the school of business, that encouraged me to get a degree from the school of business. She was very instrumental in charting my future. I was recruited by Shell Oil as the second woman in their marketing department." From there, Cynthia got involved in the health care industry, working for over 20 years and developing her own business. When she sold her business and began paying closer attention to her investment, she realized she could better manage her money, and has been very successful since. "Being part of Gamma Phi gave me the confidence to open my own business and do things that I might never have done." As a way to give back to Gamma Phi for the impact it has had on her life, Cynthia donated to complete the Memorial Garden. "When I heard about the project, I immediately thought of my pledge mom and how she really impacted my life, which has allowed me to have the success I've had. The Memorial Garden is to honor those Gamma Phis who have inspired their sisters, and that is exactly what she did for me." Cynthia and her husband, Wayne, live in La Verne, California, and have one son, Daniel. She enjoys volunteering with local charities, her church, and horseback riding.
