Sgt. Lisa Bowman tells the Sacramento Bee that several witnesses, including four young children, saw the trio punching the 17-year-old before tossing him into a van late Sunday. Bowman says the victim had been texting the 13year-old and agreed to meet her. When he arrived at her house he was ambushed, chased and beaten before being carried away and shoved in the van. A witness chased the van and was able to provide police with a license plate number. The victim was treated for his injuries at a hospital. Calif. bar asked to remove sign thanking veterans HUNTINGTON BEACH (AP) — The owner of an Orange County bar has gotten a brief reprieve from a notice ordering him to remove a rooftop sign thanking veterans. Johnny Kresimir was told Monday to remove the sign atop Johnny's Saloon in Huntington Beach within two days, or start racking up fines. But now Kresimir tells the Orange County Register that city officials want to sit down with him next week, so the deadline's off the table for now. The city issued the take-down notice after receiving an anonymous complaint citing a local law that says Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. Northern Calif restaurant owner found dead SACRAMENTO (AP) — The co-owner of a Sammy Hagar-themed restaurant that is the centerpiece of a revitalization effort in a Sacramento suburb was found dead by recreational divers off the coast in far Northern California, authorities said Wednesday. Stephen Clark Pease, 57, was last seen Nov. 3 when he checked out of a hotel in Fort Bragg, more than 50 miles from the spot where his body was found, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Department said. He was driving a rental car that has not been recovered. The body was retrieved near Gualala, a small town that is roughly a three-hour drive north of San Francisco, by a state Department of Fish and Wildlife warden who swam out and pulled it ashore, where it had to be removed by a helicopter because of the steep terrain. Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Greg Van Patten said there was no obvious sign of foul play, but investigators hope to learn more from the rental car. The department has asked the U.S. Coast Guard to fly over the coastline in an attempt to spot the vehicle. ''The car is a big missing piece of the puzzle,'' Van Patten said. The coroner's office is investigating the cause of death. Pease was an owner of Sammy's Rockin' Island Bar & Grill and other businesses in Roseville, 20 miles northeast of Sacramento. The year-old restaurant closed after he disappeared and is more than $9,000 behind on a $1.5 million loan with the Roseville Community Development Corp. Feds find pot after San Diego airdrop SAN DIEGO (AP) — After spotting a package dropping from an ultra-light aircraft in southern San Diego County, Border Patrol agents found more than 260 pounds of marijuana and arrested two men who arrived to retrieve it. U-T San Diego reports the ultra-light didn't land and was tracked going back over the border to Mexico. Border Patrol spokeswoman Mary Beth Caston says agents found a metal cage filled with 10 bundles of marijuana valued at about $157,000. They arrested a 32-year-old man and a 49-year-old man, both from Mexico. Caston says one of the suspects is in the country illegally and the other is a legal permanent resident. Agents also seized a Ford Expedition parked nearby in the remote Otay Mesa area. Teen killed trying to flag down truck on I-80 LOVELOCK, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say an 18year-old California woman was hit and killed near Lovelock, Nev. while trying to flag down a pickup truck for help. Nevada Highway Patrol officials say Michalea Vines of Antelope, Calif. died after being hit on Interstate 80 just after midnight on Tuesday. Troopers say Vines was walking on the shoulder about four miles west of Lovelock when she stepped into the lane as she tried to signal a truck for help. The Ford F-150 hit her. Officials say the driver, who's from Winnemucca, pulled over and tried to help Vines, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers say Vines may have been drinking before the accident. ment for the city of 124,000. The city declared Sept. 15, 2012, to be ''Sammy Hagar Day'' to tout the restaurant's opening, with a concert and street party featuring Hagar and his band. The restaurant licensed Hagar's name, but the rocker does not have an ownership stake, city spokesman Brian Jacobson said. ''I'm utterly saddened by the news of the passing of Steve Pease. My family and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to his family and friends throughout the upcoming holidays and beyond,'' Hagar said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press by his agent. Jacobson said it is up to the restaurant's other owners to decide how to proceed, but the city remains bullish on efforts to revive the historic downtown, which has been overshadowed by a regional mall on the outskirts of the city. Pease paid the first loan installment in September, said Roseville Community Development Corp. president Howard Rudd. But he missed the second payment days before he disappeared. The corporation is not expecting Pease's company, Innova Restaurant Concepts LLC, to make the payment due this month and its attorneys have filed to hold the firm in default. Another company operated by Pease is the rental agent for three other downtown properties, Rudd said, and its tenants are making their monthly payments. Foot traffic has been good and other merchants are happy, Rudd said, partly due to the risk Pease took in developing the Hagar-themed restaurant. Hate crime reports decline in California in 2012 SACRAMENTO (AP) — The number of hate crimes reported in California declined about 12 percent last year and has dropped by more than one-third over the last decade, the state attorney general's office said Wednesday. There were 930 reported hate crimes in 2012, down from 1,060 in 2011 and 1,491 in 2003. Hate crimes based on the victim's race, ethnicity or national origin dropped 10 percent, from 587 in 2011 to 528 last year. But they still accounted for nearly 57 percent of complaints. Blacks have been the most common target, accounting for about one-third of victims in the last decade. Hate crimes targeting a victim's sexual orientation was the next largest category. Reports fell nearly 4 percent, from 244 in 2011 to 235 in 2012. Within that category, hate crimes against gay men dropped from 111 in 2011 to 88 last year. But there were 77 crimes targeting gay men in 2003, making that category the only one to show an increase in the 10-year comparison. Those involving a victim's religion dropped nearly 28 percent last year, from 201 in 2011 to 145 in 2012. Jews were once again the most common target. The reports are submitted to the attorney general's office by California law enforcement agencies and district attorney's offices. ''While overall numbers are down this year, any hate crime hurts the people and values of California,'' Attorney General Kamala Harris said in a statement. The report comes as officials are investigating four white students accused of harassing a black student at San Jose State University. They face misdemeanor hate crime and battery charges alleging they taunted their freshman dorm-mate with racial slurs, displayed a Confederate flag in the dorm suite, placed a U-shaped bicycle lock around his neck and barricaded him inside his room.
