4A Daily News – Thursday, November 28, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment University organist in Sounds of the Season Crary-Wood named enjoy," said Rothe. Music professor emeriArtist of the Month Playing the organ in tus and expert organist David Rothe has been an integral part of Chico State's "Glorious Sounds of the Season" program since it's debut. Rothe has been involved in the university's holiday music programs since 1990 when Chico State's Centennial Organ was built. When the holiday program became known as "Glorious Sounds of the Season" in 2000, Rothe and the entire arts department became involved in the performances. "I was given the honorary title 'University Organist' when the Centennial Organ was built and installed and have been happy to fulfill my roll in these concerts as service to the university and community," says Rothe. Chico State's holiday programs have evolved significantly over the years, Rothe said. Before Chico State's 27-foot-tall Centennial organ was built, Handel's "Messiah" was performed during the holiday season. After the organ's installation, Rothe's organ playing became the centerpiece of the holiday programs along with one of the Department of Music's ensembles. Finally, the idea for an all-department presentation came to fruition with the introduction of "Glorious Sounds of the Season!" "Chicoans look forward to it every year," Rothe said. "Since The Music and Theatre Departments combined last year both music and theatre faculty and students participate in the 'Glorious Sounds' event." "Glorious Sounds" has become quite the tradition in Chico over the past 14 years. With such a variety of performances, "Glori- ous Sounds" is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. And while "Glorious Sounds" provides community members with 90 minutes of fast-paced holiday entertainment, ticket sales from the performance also contribute to scholarships for deserving students. "'Glorious Sounds' became a tradition because it is a unique holiday event, with great variety, so that everyone will find something to "Glorious Sounds" has become a tradition in itself for Rothe. However, he thinks the audience comes for the variety and the ambiance. Rothe himself looks forward to the assortment of performances presented during "Glorious Sounds!" each year, although his soft spot for the Centennial Organ remains. "Of course I look forward to playing the greatest pipe organ within 100 miles of Chico," he said. This year, Rothe will be playing the organ alongside Chico State's Brass Choir in its performance of "In Dulci Jubilo" by Michael Praetorious. The choirs' and audience's carol singing will also be accompanied by Rothe's organ playing. In addition, Rothe plans on including an organ solo or two. Pieces he has performed at "Glorious Sounds!" in the past include chorale elaborations by Bach, variations on French Noels, and "majestic" processional pieces by various English and French composers. "Each year of 'Glorious Sounds' has been unique and wonderful in its own way," Rothe said. "It would be difficult to choose one year as being better than the others." The will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-7 aand 2 p.m. Dec. 8. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333. RBAA President Kathy Brehm states, "Margaret is a delightful person who brings a very unique, but elegant style of art to the Red Bluff Art Association by working her quilt designs into her painting." Margaret did her first oil painting at age four. As a nineyear old she started classes in her father's art studio. Her father William L. Crary is her largest source of inspiration. Margaret shares, "For years I couldn't imagine any art in my house that wasn't his. I have added a few paintings since then: my sister, Lynda Benziner; my daughter, MiRandaLynn Gartin, and my stepmom, Terry Crary; mine and one print that struck my love at a thrift store." Margaret did take one semester of art in high school. However, it was the five semesters of sewing that hooked her on fabric arts as a medium of expression. Sewing became far more interesting than painting. This evolved into quilting in which she has entered shows and received many awards. She also designs embroidery patterns. It was about two years ago that Margaret felt "homesick" for painting in watercolors. She says, "But by now I had no idea where to start. I was living in the Sacramento area at the time, so I made a trip up here so I could take a lesson with my father." (Most of her childhood years were spent in Happy Valley, where her family operated the Evergreen Dairy Goat Farm.) "For two days I sat in his house working on one picture, developing something I had in mind. I insisted I didn't want to practice, and that I wanted to learn right on the actual picture. I decided to mush together my quilting designs with watercolors. From this I am still developing my art." Margaret calls Red Bluff her home now and is currently attending Shasta College part time. She left Happy Valley to join the Navy in 1986, working as a line handler on a tug boat in Norfolk, Virginia. She has three grown children. Her oldest daughter is married and she and her husband are in their seventh year studying theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her two sons, both live and work in the Sacramento area. In addition to RBAA, Margaret is a member of the Sun Country Quilters. RBAA, bringing art opportunities, education and enrichment to the North Valley, meets Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Tehama County Fairgrounds, 650 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff.
