And you don’t need a community newspaper to locate a Wal Mart, Sam’s Club, Target or Barnes & Noble store. The growth and proliferation of national chains like these have homogenized our communities rendering them void of their uniqueness and charm. This is why community weekly newspapers are growing in popularity nationwide and bucking the downward readership trends of traditional daily newspapers. It’s easy to fi gure out: Community newspapers focus their support on “local” people, businesses and organizations. As a result, they continue to be relevant, well read and effective. Another reason community newspapers are growing is that they support and promote “shop local” every day. Not just during the holiday season. No, you won’t fi nd Wal Mart, Olive Garden, Target or Books-A-Million in any local publication supporting, advertising and promoting local communities. Why? Well, you just don’t need any media resource directing you to a Kmart, Best Buy, Sam’s Club, Ruby Tuesday or any national chain or “box” store. For thousands of local residents, newcomers and visitors, Fayetteville’s uniqueness and charm is best captured, discovered and communicated through “local” media. What better resource could someone have to instantly experience what Fayetteville and Cumberland County have to offer in terms of art, music, theatre, museums, parks, dining, shopping, entertainment and all things “uniquely” Fayetteville”? In addition, they enjoy access to the latest in news, views and opinions that will ultimately shape this community and defi ne our quality of life. Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Thursday Saturday December 23 December 24 December 25 Fayetteville is more than big box stores and a shopping mall. Look to Up & Coming Weekly to fi nd the best local treasures the community has to offer. “Nothing to do in Fayetteville?” Oh, my! This holiday season before you automatically head for the mall or “box” store to do your holiday shopping, consider visiting one of our “unique” communities like Haymount or Historic Downtown Fayetteville. Instead of Shoney’s or Ihop for breakfast, consider the local fare of JK’s Deli, Zorbas, the Haymont Grill or Horne’s restaurant and meet the locals! If a rich cup of coffee, a good book, handcrafted art and custom jewelry are your fancy, then visit Rude Awakening, City Center Gallery, Twisted Jewelers and Greg’s or the Franklin Street shops downtown. All are only blocks apart offering up that unique, local Fayetteville experience that Starbuck’s, Barnes and Nobles and similar national chains just cannot provide, imitate or emulate. Yes, Up & Coming Weekly is proud to be Fayetteville and Cumberland County’s weekly newspaper. We will continue to support the people, businesses, institutions and organizations that shape, defi ne and support our community and we hope and encourage you to do the same. Money spent with local businesses ... stays in this community. From all the “locals” here at Up & Coming Weekly and Kidsville News!, we wish you a Merry Christmas, the happiest of Holidays and a very, very prosperous New Year! Thanks for reading YOUR community newspaper. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? edi- tor@upandcomingweekly.com.
