Chapter Embraces Balanced Man Program sigma phi epsilon Sound Mind Concept Helps Undergraduates A labama Beta, with help from Sigma Phi Epsilon National, subscribes to the ancient Greek belief that the mind is central to humanity and that the body serves as a vessel for the mind, and thus, the exercise of both is necessary for a balanced life. Developing a sound mind means living a lifestyle that allows you to expand and challenge your mind both and outside of the classroom. This includes developing habits that keep your mind healthy and avoiding stress and depression. More than 60 brothers helped clean up a local graveyard for a community service project. Sound mind programming challenges a young man to look for learning experiences outside of the classroom and to find unique and innovative ways to continually stimulate himself and others intellectually. Good sound mind programming helps develop lifelong habits that continually challenge and expand mental capacities. Chapters should seek out subject matter experts on campus or in the community who can come teach the Chapter about topics like philosophy, academics success, time and stress management, graduate school, studying abroad, and being a lifelong learner. College is one of the best times in a young man's life to expand his horizons and learn from new and challenging experiences. Seeking out these types of sound mind opportunities as a Chapter will aid in the overall development of more balanced men. Judd and Libba have two daughters, Christine and Rachel. Christine and her husband live in Denmark, while Rachel and her husband live in Tuscaloosa. Rachel works for the University of Alabama and Judd said that she has kept him up to date on the progress of Alabama Beta and their awards and accomplishments. Judd is happily retired in Auburn where he and Libba have lived since 2006. It seems like that could not be possible for the Bama grad, but Judd says it is a great place to live. He still is a part-time minister, but mostly spends his time being the "Preacher's wife." You can e-mail Judd at juddstinson@yahoo.com. Undergraduate Colony Looks to Achieve Chapter Status Actives Excelling in All Areas T his semester for Alabama Beta has been one of the best and most successful in our Chapter's history. We have excelled in all areas of campus activities and our internal Chapter programming has been top notch. Alabama Beta Recruits 37 Quality Men The Chapter welcomed 37 new brothers this fall with our largest and most successful recruitment period yet. We held several recruitment events, such as a Braves game in Atlanta, and lake and pool days. These young men are high achieving academically and heavily involved in other freshman leadership positions on campus. Chapter Gives Back to Community We held our most successful philanthropy event ever this semester. Brothers and guests enjoyed a night of fun at our Casino Royale event playing Black Jack, Hold 'em poker, and other casino games. From this, we raised nearly $3,000 to give to our local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in Tuscaloosa. A big thank-you to all the alumni who supported our efforts in this endeavor! Homecoming Week a Success This year, we paired with Alpha Omicron Pi for Homecoming week. We helped with their lawn decoration and supported them in the rest of the week's festivities, placing second in the lawn decoration category. Chartering on Horizon for Active Chapter A committee of our brothers and the Executive Board has worked to complete our chartering petition to send to the National Board of Directors. This is a huge milestone for our Chapter, and I am proud of the work that we have done to accomplish this. Website Geared Toward Alumni Feedback We have added a new section to our Chapter website specifically devoted to our alumni. Please visit www.alabamasigep.com to see information about the Chapter House and other information pertinent to alumni. Feel free to explore the rest of our Chapter website, too. If you are ever in the Tuscaloosa area, please give me a call. It has been my honor to serve on the Executive Board for two years now, and as I transition off of the board and prepare to graduate and join your ranks as an alumnus, I would enjoy the opportunity to get to know as many of you as I can.
