Sigma Phi Epsilon IT TAKES A VILLAGE Chapter Advisor Acknowledges Staff and Volunteers That Keep the Chapter Alive I t has been a busy fall for Kansas Beta Chapter. Move-in day for the Chapter was August 20 for upperclassmen and August 22 for new members. The Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) hosted an allChapter retreat on August 23 and school started on Monday, August 26, a week later than normal. and I also oversee house maintenance and operations issues. It is quite a challenge to keep things working and in good order. However, we are able to keep on top of repairs with the help of our part-time maintenance man, Rick Boatman. He is a licensed electrician and has been instrumental in keeping the facility looking good and up to code. This is the fourth year for our housemother, Mrs. Jean Reiter. She does an outstanding job of balancing house operations, attending intramurals, proofreading papers, ensuring the food service runs smoothly and watching over the men that live in the Chapter House. Kansas Beta is a better Chapter because of her interest and concern for the well-being and development of the members. I have been pleased with the leadership of our president, Carter McEntee '14. He has a good executive board and they have been proactive in identifying issues and coming up with solutions to problems. I attended Conclave in Dallas, Texas, along with three men from the Chapter in August. This proved to be beneficial in getting new ideas and seeing how other chapters operate. This is the second year to have Sandy Ruthstsom as our cook. She drives from Clay Center every day and has not missed a day of work due to snow or ice. She is a good cook and baker and makes a majority of her food from scratch. She also does a good job of keeping us within our food budget. This is not an easy task trying to feed over 80 hungry men. Kansas Beta continues to be one of the top fraternities on campus. We were ranked sixth in grades for the spring 2013 semester with a 3.2191 G.P.A. Twelve men in the Chapter received a 4.0 and 16 received a 3.5 or higher G.P.A. The Chapter continues to be active in campus activities. We have men involved with the InterFraternity Council and many other campus organizations. I try to stop by the Chapter House on my way to campus in the mornings or during a meal time during the week. We have Spencer Bontrager '13, a fifth-year senior and graduate student in engineering, taking on the role of resident scholar. He helps with academic advising, provides support with house operations, and is a good role model. The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon were out in strong force this year supporting the event. Not only were there six undergraduate teams playing, the new member class was there in a volunteer capacity to support the event, meet and greet alumni, and lend a hand wherever needed. This has become an anticipated philanthropic event for the Rob was the epitome of a SigEp brother. Caring, genuine, and able to connect with brothers of all backgrounds he lived the principles of Sigma Phi Epsilon; Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. The success of this tournament and the funds that have been donated since 1998 to help find a cure for cancer are a tribute to Rob's memory. PAGE 2
