8A – Daily News – Tuesday, December 7, 2010 Scientists for a day Masterworks chorale to perform Christmas songs The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale and Orchestra will present the Songs of the Christmas Season concert on Sun- day, December 12. Two concerts are being planned with an afternoon con- cert at 3 p.m. in the chapel at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, 26240 Seventh Street in Vina. There will also be an evening concert at 7 p.m. at the historic First Christian Church on the corner of Madison and Hickory Streets in downtown Red Bluff. This is the second concert hosted by the monks of the Vina Monastery. Last year the public was invited to join with the monks in worship as the Chorale and Orchestra pre- sented Messiah by G.F.Handel. The response was over- whelmingly positive and before the evening was over the Chorale was committed to a repeat visit. “The monks of the monastery were so gracious and thankful for the music of the Chorale,” according to the singers. The Hallelujah Chorus sung by the Chorale will open the concert. The Orchestra will follow with the Overture to the cantata For Us A Child is Born by J.S. Bach. The Chorale will answer with a chorale from the Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Sans. The program will continue with A Christmas Suite, arranged by David T. Clydesdale. This suite draws from a variety of Christmas favorites woven together in three move- ments. The audience will be encouraged to sing along with the Chorale and Orchestra. The concert will close with a new work, Gloria, composed by current composer Mark Hayes. Using the traditional Latin text of the mass and inter- spersing the English translations, this three movement piece has become a favorite of the Chorale. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale, under the conduct- ing of Mark Franklin, is celebrating their fifteenth year of presenting Christmas concerts in the Tehama County area. The volunteer Chorale enjoys singing the major choral works of both the classical and contemporary eras. Many presentations of Messiah have been a staple of the Chorale’s repertoire. Also, on the concert schedule is the Annual Memorial Day Gala that continues to draw standing room only crowds. To become a member of the Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale speak to a member. The non-auditioned Chorale rehearsed each Monday evening. Concerts are offered with- out a ticket price. Donations are received at the door to help continue the efforts of these concerts.
