The Lion & The Ladybug 2 Miss Gracie Leaves a Legacy of Love Alpha Delta Thankful for 40 Years of Service Article written by Jory Tally '11 E mma Grace Lewis, also known as Miss Gracie, has been working at the Alpha Delta Chapter House for 40 years. She started working at the Chapter House when she was 16 years old and works just as hard now as she was when she started in August of 1973. Miss Gracie was born in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1955 and has lived in the small, beautiful town ever since. Miss Gracie, who is 58 years old, is the fifth of 12 children. Her sister, who passed away unexpectedly this summer, worked at the Kappa Kappa Gamma house for many years. Growing up, Miss Gracie and her siblings worked on their family farm. They picked and farmed cotton, milked cows, churned butter, and pumped water. They never had to go to the store to buy anything. According to House Director Vicki Taylor, Miss Gracie has only missed work twice due to doctor appointments. Miss Gracie is always working hard at the Alpha Delta house and is a very loving woman who has a great laugh. During the 40 years that Miss Gracie has worked for Alpha Delta, she has had three children and six grandchildren. It is hard to believe that this year marks 40 years of Miss Gracie working at Alpha Delta since she doesn't have a wrinkle on her. Miss Gracie is very involved in her church. Every year, she and some of the women from New Hope Baptist Church take a trip for Women's Day. They have been to St. Louis, Missouri; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Hot Springs, Arkansas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Biloxi, Mississippi. Miss Gracie still works full time Monday through Friday. She has a great relationship with the other Alpha Delta staff and Chapter members. If any of the Alpha Delta members ever need anything, they all know that Miss Gracie will be there for them. She has been at Alpha Delta for so long that she has seen many things change. She has worked with five housemoms, cooked for many different pledge classes, and has seen Alpha Delta be remodeled a few times. Alpha Delta is so blessed to have a woman like Miss Gracie around. Women like her help make Phi Mu special. She sets a great example for Alpha Delta members. Many current Alpha Delta members have the privilege to say that Miss Gracie was working for Alpha Delta when their moms or sisters were active members. It is safe to say that Miss Emma Grace Lewis has marked her own legacy at Alpha Delta. She says she is going to be working for the Chapter until the day she dies. Undergraduates Earn 3.17 GPA Visit the Chapter for Game Day W e began the fall semester with our weeklong recruitment workshop, which got us fired up for recruitment. Along with recruitment, we are also planning to excel in academics. Our spring GPA was a 3.17, which is the highest it has been in the past five years. Our GPA is higher than the all-women's average and the all-Greek average! Sisters Volunteer at Freshman Move-In For the second year in a row, our Chapter had the highest participation in the Groovin' at Move-In activity. The Chapter worked with University Housing to help freshmen move into their dorm rooms. Alpha Delta has also been working to better the lives of the children at LeBonheur Hospital in Memphis. Twelve members brought toys and cards for all of the children and had a great time. Megan McBeth '11 (daughter of Joell Harris McBeth '87) won the election with 58% of the vote. Alpha Delta could not be more proud of our outstanding sister. Get Involved with Alpha Delta As our Chapter size grows tremendously each year, we cannot thank you enough for all of your love and support. Feel free to contact us if you would like to become more involved in Chapter activities or get to know us personally. We will be hosting a tent in the Grove and would love to have alumnae visit and celebrate game day with us. We cherish the relationships that we are able to develop with others who share the same goal of seeing Alpha Delta succeed. Grace Thompson '12, Amy Le '12 (sister of Tamy Le '10), Sammy Mayhew '12 and Marianne Ulett '12 help freshmen move into their dorms at Groovin' at Move-In. Megan McBeth '11 Named Homecoming Queen Alpha Delta traveled back in time as we hosted an '80s prom date party where Jordan Smith '10 was named prom queen by the Chapter. During the University's annual elections for Homecoming Court, Anna Grey McCraw '11 (sister of Ross McCraw '09) was elected for Junior Maid. After a runoff for Homecoming Queen, Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the status of our Chapter and the legacy of excellence we continue at the University of Mississippi. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Love in Our Bond, Kelly Barnett '10 Chapter President alphadelta.pres@gmail.com
