I've taken inventory here at Pine Creek Farm; we have 17 species of evergreens—broadleaf as well as conifers. From these we make decorations for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays. They are long-lasting and fragrant. We make and decorate with wreaths, swags, centerpieces, baskets and buckets, garlands, and even old fashioned kissing balls from fresh greens we cut on our place. Our pines—Scotch pine/Pinus sylvestris. Nice Christmas tree when young; rangier when mature. It has medium length blue-green needles and 2 inch cones. The cut branches make sturdy backing for wreaths. Ponderosa/P. ponderosa. This one has a straight trunk and grows 50-100+ feet. Being so tall makes it hard to harvest branches but the fallen cones are perfect size for decorating wreaths. Juniper/Juniperus chinensis "Sea Green." This juniper is a fountain shaped evergreen. Junipers come in yellows, greens, blues and grays; in all shapes and sizes — tall trees, columns, fountains, mounding shrubs, and ground covers; and are indispensable for making decorations. The tiny blue juniper berries are best close up in centerpieces and baskets. Arizona cypress/Cupressus arizonica. Tiny scale-like needles are blue-gray and lend a soft contrast to the greens of the pines and junipers. The nut-like gray cones add interest. Spruce/Picea pungens "Colorado Blue Spruce." The name says it all. We usually see them as dwarf decorated Christmas trees from Raley's or large dense yard specimens. Around Red Bluff there are beautiful specimens of Atlas Cedars/Cedrus atlantica and Deodar Cedar/C. deodara (with the nodding tip). These grow to 60+ feet tall and 30+feet in diameter and need lots of space. These blue-green beauties are lovely in swags. Their unique cones are 2-3 inch flat "roses" perfect for center pieces. The popular Incense Cedar/Calocedrus decurrents is not a true cedar. This beautiful dark green evergreen with a wonderfully pungent fragrance adds to decorations. Another misnamed tree is the Douglas-fir/Pseudotsuga menziesii. It is not true fir, but its lovely soft gray-green branches look wonderful in seasonal decorations. The soft cones are just right for garlands and centerpieces. Redwood/Sequoia sempervirens This self-sprouting tree doesn't look as pretty here in our hot valley as they do in groves over on the Coast unless it gets lots of water. Mixed with other greens, these green over gray soft-needled wellbranched cuttings make for beautiful seasonal decorations. Thuja/Arborvitae is one of those indispensable evergreens. It grows in globe, cone or cylinder shapes. Some varieties are yellow/gold and some are blue-green; all make excellent accents in wreaths and centerpieces. The branches are flat and show off the hard round green or gray cones. Come see all of these at the Garden Club Christmas Boutique on Dec. 12, 13 and 14 and buy a wreath or two. The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with the Cascade District Garden Club; California Garden Clubs, Inc; Pacific Region Garden Clubs; and National Garden Clubs Inc.
