INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Do current events sometimes get you frustrated? Well, sometimes I fi nd that an extremely loud shout out helps to calm my nerves. Thank goodness I (we) have a community newspaper to practice our cherished First Amendment rights of free speech. Actually, many of our readers often tell us that we say (write) exactly what they are thinking. This helps to reassure them that they are not crazy. You know the drill: “If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it is a duck.” Here are a few of my recent “bricks and bouquets” rants. Send me yours. Brick 1: To the TSA for their use of “full body scanners” and groping “pat downs.” They are assaulting, insulting and useless in deterring terrorist threats. Anyone who uses public air travel knows these tactics are ineffective in detecting an avowed terrorist. It is for show only. Fred Best for the 4th of July. Bouquet 2: To Dr. Janine Scott- Lowe for her fun and innovative concept to better our community. She created the Hip Hop, Happiness and Hope Preventative Health Fair and Free Concert to improve the health and welfare of all Fayetteville residents. See the feature on page 13. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious. A special note: Fred W. Best Jr. 1928-2010 So long good friend. Your humor, warmth and friendship will be greatly missed. Up & Coming Weekly has lost a critic, loyal reader and long-time Brick 2: Again to TSA for its survey that states 80 percent of American’s approve of these antiterrorist intrusions if they are needed to keep Americans safe. This is propaganda if you’ve ever read it. The people surveyed probably do not even fl y. Pollsters don’t dare survey the ticket holders at the airport. Brick 3: To the North Carolina Judicial system for virtually exonerating former Gov. Mike Easley from all charges (less one) of corruption and wrongdoing. Hmmm, what message are we sending our children? Bouquet 1: To the Arts Council, downtown merchants, Hank Parfi tt and volunteers for another fabulous Dickens Holiday. For 11 years this has been Fayetteville’s perfect beginning to the holiday season. It was wonderful, wonderful! Next year, ditch the fi reworks. They are not needed, save them Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast December 3 Thursday December 2 Saturday December 4 High 55° Low 33° Partly Cloudy 4 UCW DECEMBER 1-7, 2010 High 57° Low 32° Partly Cloudy High593° Low 36° Sunny Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Friday advocate. In 15 years I don’t think Fred ever missed an issue of Up & Coming Weekly. Fred was a friend, a fi erce soldier, a loyal Kiwanian and a consummate gentleman. Every time I would see Fred he would say, “How’s your lovely wife Merrilyn?” always calling her by name. “What’s Grady doing in New York?” would be his next question, quickly followed by, “I remember when he was 5-years-old standing on the table singing. My how time fl ies.” Then he would say “I really enjoy reading your Down & Out newspaper.” That corny joke came out of his mouth as if it was the very fi rst time he ever said it. Yes, “Down & Out” is what he called it and after 15 years, I will miss his sincere but respectful jab. I will miss Fred. We will all miss Fred. Thanks for reading Down & Out Weekly. Oops! I mean Up & Coming Weekly. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up and Coming Weekly. COMMENTS? Editor@upandcomingweekly.com.
