today. "I'm a product of the Salvation Army," he said. "They took me in." He confessed, "As a child, I didn't know any different, but being on the other side of it now, I know that someone cared. If we could do that for every kid, we could really make a difference." With a variety of programs, from elderly care to disaster relief to children's summer camp and facilities in Cumberland, Robeson, Hoke, Scotland and Moore counties, the organization is able to meet the community's needs. For the staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army, the holiday season is just another chance to serve hot lunch and dinner meals, host overnight guests and provide nonperishable food items to those who need it most. Smith said the organization already has the volunteers it needs to continue those services throughout the holidays. However, community members can serve in different ways, such as dedicating two hours of their time to collect donations in the organization's familiar kettles. Proceeds cycle back into the organizations' outreach and are used for the purchase of Christmas gifts for angel tree sponsorships and guests in the shelter and comfort kits for nursing home residents, veterans and prisoners. You can also sponsor a child through the Salvation Army angel tree, which will be found at the Cross Creek mall food court November 16th through December 24th. "What kid doesn't deserve to wake up on Christmas morning with presents under the Christmas tree?" Smith said. The Salvation Army will host a toy drive starting October 21st for which volunteers will be needed to distribute the gifts on December 19th and 20th in Cumberland County. Anyone in outreach will tell you that the need for donations and service doesn't stop after the Christmas tree is put away. "There is the season of giving, but homeless people are there year round," Rogers said.
