Lambda Letter the fall 2013 Alumni Newsletter of the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi Major Maintenance Work Completed This Summer T he 2013-14 school year started with a Chapter House at full occupancy and in great condition when the active members returned in August. The summer months were again a time to return the house to top condition. This work occurred inside and outside the house. But first, the Board of Directors offers its congratulations to the active Chapter for its Peterson Chapter Award. We are very proud of the improvements made by the active Chapter. This was the first Peterson Award for the Chapter in 30 years. Lambda also had a first occurrence at Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. Andrew Esstman '13 won the National Balfour Award. Andrew has the distinction as being the first National Balfour Award winner for Lambda Chapter! Now back to house maintenance. We completed the replacement of the hard surface flooring in the old and new sections of the house. The scope of work was the third floor rooms in the old part of the house. We also did the entire senior wing. This was a three year project undertaken because the flooring installed during the remodeling four years ago was not durable and broke down. The new flooring has already proven to be very durable and easy to take care of. The parking lot was cleaned, resealed, and lines painted. The re-sealing coupled with the contour changes along the alley have transformed the appearance of the back of the house. Another major project was not planned, but was the result of several inches of water flooding the basement study room. Cheryl and our maintenance contractor spent many hours searching for the source of the water. They were able to find the source and modify the exterior area that had pushed the water into the basement study room. The exterior tile also had to be cleared of roots. The repairs included removing all the dry wall, paneling, and carpet. The paneling was replaced, desks were replaced, (Continued on page 3) Lambda Recognized at National Level Alumni Invited to Visit during Homecoming L ambda Chapter is very proud to report the recognition of our Chapter's continued success by the National Fraternity. This year at the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW) award ceremony, we were awarded the Peterson Significant Chapter Award. This is the first time our Chapter has received the award since 1993. We believe this is a huge testament to the work both past and current brothers have contributed to further the reputation and character of the Lambda Chapter. These efforts were led by past Consul Michael Courtney '14 and his executive team. We look forward to continuing these great achievements and having another successful year. Also at the BLTW award ceremony, Andrew Esstman '13 was awarded the International Balfour Award after being selected as one of four final candidates for the prestigious award. This is a fitting testimony to the incredible work Andrew performed during his time at Lambda Chapter. Andrew was consul of the Chapter, president of the IU Interfraternity Council, and held many other leadership positions both within the Chapter and on campus. His efforts have undoubtedly helped the Chapter reach the position it is in today, and we congratulate him on this outstanding individual achievement.
