illinois beta chapter Illinois Beta Mid–'50s Class Reunions in Chicago By Fred Cox '57 I n 2009, Jack Kunz '57, president of the 1957 pledge class, passed away. Brothers in the Chicago area, Leo Malantis '57 and Jim Chengary '58, decided to try to assemble and hold a reunion with as many of their classmates as they could. They wanted to be able to give each other the grip while they still could. Guys in their mid-70s are not a segment of people who are very active computer users, so it was a daunting task to locate a bunch of guys by word of mouth or telephone. The ground troops around Chicago, Leo, Jim, and Tom Crays '56, delegated the search project to myself, who, sitting in the middle of the woods in north Idaho, possessed some Internet search programs to dig up brothers from all over the country. Brothers attend the mid-'50s reunion in Chicago. The SAE National Office was a great place to start. Manager of Alumni Services and Projects Teresa Hightower was a big help, as she possessed the data on brothers: listings of those known as active, lost, and, of course, those who have entered Chapter Eternal. After a few months of calling and e-mailing, we had a list of more than 60 living brothers who expressed an interest in attending a reunion. The first was held in September 2010. Twenty-six brothers and wives from classes from '55-'59 attended. It was repeated in 2011 and again this year. We don't do city tours, guest speakers or museums. We schedule only cocktail socials and dinner. Everything else is wide open to whatever anyone wants to do. I believe that all attendees experience a warm and renewing experience of the brotherhood. Our song leaders, Jim Chengary and Bill Johnson '55, are instrumental in bringing to the surface the old feelings we had back at 211 E. Daniel. One highlight this year was Leo Malantis, who brought out his SAE pin and pinned his Sweetheart. And, of course, we serenaded her with our SAE Sweetheart song! Alumni reminisce on college days by serenading at the class reunion.
