Alumni Newsletter Dedicated to all the Men and Women of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Missouri Gamma Chapter and Named in Memory of our Enthusiastic Brother Wilbur "Beartracks" Burton and his wife Daisy Fall 2013 Inside: Dr. LeRoy Thompson '56 Inducted 2 Memorable Experiences from Conclave 2 Alumni Spotlights 3 Chapter Welcomes 23 New Members 4 Alumni Board Launches Ducal Crown Raise Fund Academic Programs Develop Future Leaders B "Not just a good Chapter, a great Chapter!" ecoming a great Chapter has been the focus of the alumni board and the Chapter since 2006. When we first made this our mission statement, the Chapter House was worn out, membership was low, the alumni board was defensive, and communication between the alumni board and the Chapter was spotty. A team of dedicated SigEp alumni and Chapter leaders has worked to remove past issues. The team is now ready to move on to the next step toward becoming a great Chapter and needs the participation of every SigEp who has ever called MO Gamma home. Support MO Gamma Scholastics We have two plans that will advance the Chapter toward our destiny of greatness and need your commitment to support these programs. Your contributions will be tax deductible and will fund the following projects. Help Mold MO Gamma Brothers Support the Chapter through Mentorship O n September 11, Faculty Advisor Jim Taylor '10 stated: "I am so proud of you guys. You are really taking good care of the Chapter House and yard." It is always good to hear the efforts of the brothers being appreciated. They are doing many things right with the help of brotherhood development and scholarship programs. We hope to implement National's structured mentoring program. Mike Smith '65, Gerry Wappelhorst '73, Chet Parry '08 and John Belshe '11 have volunteered to be mentors. We will be expanding our use of technology via video conference calls. The program involves less than an hour each week and one visit per semester to campus if possible. It is a great way to give back to the Chapter and build a relationship with a younger brother. If you are unable to participate in the Ducal Crown Raise described on this page, please consider mentoring an undergraduate. Give me a call at the number below if you have any questions. Fraternally, Michael D. Hurst '74, Alumni Board President (314) 991-5517 • md_hurst@yahoo.com MO Gamma Tutor Program We hope to increase the GPA of every first-year member to a 4.0, which helps build confidence and ability to make outstanding grades throughout the remainder of their college years. The Chapter is committing five hours of oneon-one tutoring at the request of each first-year member. Members will also be able to use their hours in group tutoring sessions. The annual cost of this program is $2,000. We hope to establish long-term funding for this program. Officer Performance Scholarships Your Alumni Board has been awarding scholarships each semester to Chapter officers based upon their performance. Each incoming officer sits with the review board for the officer he is replacing, which allows men to build on previously learned lessons. This powerful program has improved the Chapter culture and the performance of its officers. Your Board has been spending more each year on this program as the officer performance has improved. Last year we spent some $14,700 and we want to include additional officer positions for this review. With your help we seek to expand this effective program to some $17,000 this year. Gifts for Your Commitment We wish to establish a new tradition at MO Gamma through the Ducal Crown Raise Fund and we welcome all who are willing and able to contribute. This year's annual needs total $19,000. For a five-year commitment, you will receive the Ducal Crown alumni recognition pin. For a commitment of $100 or more for each year of a five-year commitment, you will receive a pin and collared SigEp golf shirt. Please mark your size on the pledge form included in this newsletter. Please direct your annual contributions to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Foundation, MO Gamma Ducal Crown Raise Fund. Take action now to support MO Gamma's scholastic efforts and help us become a great Chapter. Fraternally, Michael D. Hurst '74, Alumni Board President (314) 991-5517 • md_hurst@yahoo.com
