L yr e The A Publication let t e r of the X i C h ap t e r of Alpha Chi Omega Fall 2013 Volunteer Efforts Pay Off for Xi Chapter nother autumn is upon us. A new school year, a fresh new member class, and a house full of bright and brilliant women are back to make 716 North 16 Street alive and vibrant! A The Xi Chapter House Corporation has been busy readying the house for their arrival and our summer was packed with projects! I am happy to report that all the rooms in the "New Addition" have been updated with new carpet, paint, and furnishings (and they all match!). Thank you very much to those of you who were so kind to donate to this effort. I know the ladies in residence will be so happy to have a fresh, clean, and safe living and study environment for this semester and into the coming years. Juniors Lauren Ibach '11 and Leah Miller '11 visit national headquarters in Indianapolis. But it doesn't stop there. Most of the sleeping rooms and hallways have been given a fresh coat of paint, the floors have been polished, and the exterior landscape has been pruned, spruced, and refreshed! If you haven't had a chance to stop by, now is the time, we would love to have you! Tremendous thanks go out to all the sisters that have had a part in coordinating and supporting these efforts–what a great way to enhance your alumnae experience but to support the house and make it the best living space for the active members! As we move forward, we continue to look toward a full kitchen update for summer 2014. If you would like to make a donation to this worthy renovation, please send your contribution to the Xi Chapter House Corporation. As Denise notes in her update on page 2, tax-deductible donations are always accepted though the Educational Corporation fund as well. We thank all of our sisters greatly for your generosity and giving spirit. It is through your support that we are able to continue to provide the best living experience for our collegiate sisters. And, of course, a most rewarding way to give back is through your time, no matter how great or brief. If you would like more information on getting involved with alumnae events, please feel free to e-mail me. In the bond, Katie Belka Becker '98 katelandb@gmail.com Xi Chapter Produces Lifelong Friendships for Betty Sprinkle '43 etty Sprinkle '43 grew up surrounded by Alpha Chi Omega. When she came to the university in 1942 she was a legacy from her aunt and her sister. During her time as a collegian, the country was fighting in World War II, which impacted her experience. B "No formals or cars. Most of the men were in the service. The band and cheerleaders were all men, but that changed when I came to school," she recalls. "It was a hard time losing a lot of men and Alpha Chi Omega supported the school in whatever it promoted." While her years at the university and Xi Chapter were different from the experience that women receive now, her memories still mean so much to her. "I have wonderful memories of Xi Chapter," says Betty. "It was worth my four years in college to be a member while attending the university." After graduation Betty attended NYU and received her master's degree in retail. However, she didn't like the big city so she relocated to Chicago and worked at a department store for several years until Chicago got too big, too. "I'm more of a small town girl, and I wanted to get closer to my family. I got a job in Kansas City and have been here ever since," says Betty. As an alumna, she had a difficult time attending the alumnae group events because of her busy work schedule, but that didn't stop her from keeping in touch with her closet sisters. "There were five of us and we got together once or twice a year. We were lifelong friends," says Betty. When she reminisces on her time as an undergraduate, it motivates her to contribute to the annual campaign. "I want Alpha Chi Omega at University of Nebraska-Lincoln to remain a top chapter, so I've done what I can do to help," says Betty.
