Symphony brass quintet Five professional brass players from the North State Symphony will perform a program Oct. 19 and 20 called The Gleaming Brass for audiences in Chico and Redding under the symphony's auspices. Their program of quintets includes a number of short, light works as well as a full-length piece for the ensemble. The chance to perform as a quintet is exciting to the players, according to Music Director Kyle Wiley Pickett. "In the orchestra concerts when I am conducting," said Pickett, "brass players only play for a short time at special, big moments. This is their chance to show you what they can do, with no conductor, and display their tal- ents and have a lot of fun." Several classical composers wrote works for a brass group, and many well-known selections have also been arranged for this special purpose. The concert will include an opera excerpt, an original brass quintet and tunes from the worlds of ragtime and jazz. The Saturday, Oct. 19 concert is at 7:30 p.m. in CSU, Chico's RowlandTaylor Recital Hall. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333, or online at www.chicostatetickets.com.
