ΣΦΕ H eartbeaT Oregon Beta University of Oregon s Sigma Phi Epsilon Fall 2013 Out with the Old, In with the New Volunteers Needed to Serve Oregon Beta O ut with old, in with the new could have been our theme for the spring and summer 2013. Bursting pipes, leaky storage tank, and a huge mass of asbestos were replaced with four new 93-gallon, stainless steel hot water exchangers and many feet of new piping. The old system, installed when the Chapter House was built in the late '50s-early '60s (if someone knows the actual date we moved into 1000 Alder, let me know), had reached a point where it was no longer safe, as pipes carrying water at 185 degrees were rusting through. The system has served us well and it is my hope the $40,000 we spent will do us just as well. I have discovered, as we do projects around the house, that whoever designed the facility did an amazing job and the construction echoed that effort in both material selection and workmanship. I would hate to think what it would cost to build a facility of its caliber today. This same kind of thoughtful foundation work at the active level is a big reason that Oregon Beta still exists. Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love is as prominent today as it was 87 years ago when Oregon Beta was founded. While Oregon Beta remains a Chapter, governed and operated largely by the actives, there has been a small group of alumni that has gently looked over the actives' shoulders, helping them try and avoid the pitfalls that have led to the demise of other fraternities at the U of O. That small group of alumni needs to grow. We are in desperate need of younger members who can help us maintain the operation of Oregon Beta. It is not an overwhelming job; a few hours a month, the willingness to help young SigEps, and a belief that fraternities make a difference are all that it takes. If you think this is something you would like to do please contact me. The sign is still out – "Help Wanted." SigEp Sets Goals for Semester T his summer Oregon Beta enjoyed a relaxing few months. Now with school starting, football season, and a packed and important fall, we have many events planned to go along with the stresses of recruiting and keeping our grades up. ACADEMICS A PRIORITY First and foremost, we must remember we are here for school. Unfortunately, last spring our Chapter G.P.A. fell to 2.97, slightly below our goal of 3.05. Our academic chairman is determined and taking measures to improve our grades. STRONG RECRUITMENT Last spring we had 97 members, making SigEp the largest Fraternity on campus. Going into the fall semester we have 80 members and expect a class of 25-30 to make us the first Fraternity to eclipse the 100-member mark on campus. In order to recruit we have numerous events coming up this year, including paintball, football tailgates, and basketball at the Chapter House. We also hosted the annual Bright & Tight party the first weekend of the semester. (Continued on page 2)
