Motorcycle Safety an Issue by STEPHANIE CRIDER According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, more than 43,000 Americans die in traffic accidents each year. The World Health Organization says that 1.2 million die in traffic collisions worldwide and another 50 million suffer disabling injuries in traffic accidents. These are sobering statistics, indeed. A close-knit group, the patrons of Legends Pub are While accidents hosting a fundraiser to benefit one of their own, are just that, many James "Flea" Weatherly. of them could be avoided. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers a few key points for drivers, "with an eye toward protecting one particularly vulnerable party — motorcyclists." • Look for motorcyclists. Use your eyes and mirrors to see what's around, and check the blind spots when you're changing lanes or turning at intersections. Look, and look again. Since motorcycles are typically smaller than cars, they can be easy to miss. • Focus on Driving. With distractions like kids, handheld devices, GPS systems, the radio it can be easy to get distracted. Eating, drinking, applying make-up and other activities are a few other common things that pull a driver's attention away from the road. In a May 2013 study, the National Safety Council found that 25 percent of car crashes are likely to be caused by cell phone use. Drivers on their phones miss about 50 percent of the things going on around them. • Use Your Turn Signals. Signal your intentions for everyone's safety. • Give Two-Wheelers Some Room. Don't tailgate or pass too closely. • Take Your Time. Nothing is as important as the safety of your loved ones, yourself, and the others with whom you share the road. On Oct. 19, Holly Whitley, owner of Legends Pub, is sponsoring a fundraiser to benefit one of the patrons of her establishment, James "Flea" Weatherly. Weatherly, a regular at Legends Pub and a friend of Whitley's, was recently in an accident while riding his motorcycle. "Flea and his wife have always been big supporters of the community and they participate in most every event we put on," said Whitley. "There is a singing bass that hangs on the wall here that we always put up for auction when we hold fundraisers. Flea bids on that fish every single time. I can't tell you how many times he has won that fish in an auction. He never takes it home, but he always bids on it to raise money for whatever cause we are trying to support. There was one year that we couldn't find the fish and he bid on it anyway just to help us out." Like all events that Legends Pub hosts, this one promises to be great fun. The food, auction items and camaraderie are always a big part of these events and add a jovial air to the rides. Auction items are still being accepted. Those interested in donating can call 867-2364 for more information. "We are really hoping to get a good turn out for this. It should be a lot of fun and a chance to do something that will help out someone we really care about," said Whitley. There will be a raffle for a 50" flat screenTV.
