An LDC is a recent graduate whose fulltime responsibility is to support our collegiate chapters. Jamie will travel to various college campuses throughout the school year. Her duties include officer education, leadership development, chapter organization, supervision of membership recruitment, and assistance with new chapters. Originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, Jamie served Alabama Beta as chapter president and two terms as vice president of communications. However, here at Alabama Beta, we were as busy as ever. Our spring calendar was jam-packed with sisterhood, philanthropy events, and lots of fun with our alumnae. The May 2013 graduate class for Alabama Beta poses together in front of the house. Pi Phi Bond Strengthened this Spring Sisterhood Chairman Mary Grace Kullman '10 and Vice President of Event Planning Carice Parker '10 worked hard to provide members with lots of fun sisterhood events throughout the entire semester. We rented out the top floor of Mellow Mushroom for pizza and trivia, Bama Lanes for a Pi Phi-only bowling night, and an entire movie theatre for showings of Safe Haven and Oz the Great and Powerful. We also had jewelry and clothing trunk shows every month, and makeup designers came to the house to do our makeup before our annual Beauxs and Arrows Formal. Philanthropy and Community Service a Top Priority As always at Alabama Beta, philanthropy is an important part of our calendar. In addition to the Champions are Readers (CAR) program, where we read weekly to third graders at Holt Elementary School, we hosted two large philanthropy functions this semester. On Saturday, March 2 (Dr. Seuss's birthday), we spent Fraternity Day of Service at a local Barnes & Noble where children of all ages were invited to read their favorite books, eat cookie cake, and make bookplates to either keep for themselves or donate. Our annual Arrow Open Golf Tournament was held on Sunday, April 21, and was a success. We raised over $2,000 Pi Phis make book plates with local children from Sandy Hook Elementary. and had a blast with friends, parents, and local members of the community. Alumnae Return for Founders' Day I am happy that the novel is receiving wonderful reviews and has touched the hearts of many with its vivid descriptions and heart-wrenching emotions." Although Heidi has not been able to make it back to campus since the late '90s, she has been involved in the alumnae club and reconnected with many of her sisters via Facebook. "I would really encourage all the alumnae of Alabama Beta to get back in touch. It's amazing how close we still are and how easy it is to feel at home once again with your sisters." Heidi resides in Nashville with her two children, Reid and Emily. In her free time, she enjoys figure skating, which she has been doing for more than 10 years, occasionally competing in adult events. She is currently working on her second novel and hopes to have it published by next spring. Heidi can be reached at hefmail@bellsouth.net. Spring semester was also spent connecting with our alumnae, both locally and far away. On Sunday, February 10, Alabama Beta and Jacqueline Dennis '94, president of the Tuscaloosa Alumnae Club, hosted a Valentine's Day Cookie Shine at the Pi Beta Phi house. Alumnae from around the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa area came by for songs, sisterhood, and delicious cookies. Founders' Day was especially meaningful this year. Vice President of Fraternity Development Dabney Powell '11 hosted a beautiful event in the south zone of our beautiful Bryant-Denny Stadium overlooking the football field. Chapter award nominees were announced, graduating seniors were recognized, and our House Corporation updated us on the future of our house. A very special moment was when we presented the inaugural Barbara Best Kucharski Award, named for former AAC Chairman Barbara Best Kucharski '79. Alabama Beta Well Represented at Convention Pi Beta Phi's biannual convention was held June 28-July 2 in San Diego, California. Vice President of Member Development Alexis Schutz '11, VP Fraternity Developement Dabney Powell '11, Sidney Stratton '12, Lauren Wethern '12, AAC Chairwoman Rachel Jennings '06, and I represented Alabama Beta at the convention. We had so much fun meeting new sisters, exchanging ideas with other chapters, and discovering new ways to improve our own chapter that we can implement right away. It was truly one of the best experiences of my Pi Beta Phi membership thus far. We left the school year with a very exciting spring semester under our belts and we cannot wait to start off the fall semester with an amazing new member class—and maybe another national championship!
