Corning prepares for book sale Whittenberg Country School and the Sacramento River Discovery Center are putting on the inaugural Pumpkinhead Family Bike Ride Saturday, Oct. 12. Starting at 10 a.m. from Ridgeway Park, the all-ages ride will have four routes to choose from: The Seedling, a 3K level loop route; The Jack-Be-Little, a 6K there-andback-again route on level ground; The Jack-O-Lantern, a 9K loop route with some moderate elevation changes; and The Giant Pumpkin, a 15K loop route with moderate elevation changes. Proceeds from the ride will support outdoor educational and recreational programs of the school and the Sacramento River Discovery Center, as well as contribute toward local trails. The cost for adult riders is $20 and youth 14 and younger are $10; each rider will receive a sports bottle and goodie bag — up to the first 200 riders. There will be a few fun activities set up at the park for before or after the rides, many with a Jack Pumpkinhead or other Oz-related theme — Jack being a character from the classic Oz stories. Along with the ride, the event will have a scarecrow contest. The entry fee is just $5, and riders will get to vote on their favorites, with prizes given out for the winning scarecrows. Additionally, the local chapter of Soroptimists International, which is a sponsor of the ride, will be raffling off a child's bike at the event; tickets are $1 each or 15 for $10, as well as promoting the annual Chocolate Fantasia event, which will be on Saturday, Oct. 26. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the event itself. For more information, call 526-7649 or send an email to whittenbergcountryschool@gmail.com. To get to Ridgeway Park, take Walnut Street west until Wilder Road, then Wilder south to Live Oak Road, then Live Oak west until Ridge Road, at which point you can see the the radar base, which is right next to Ridgeway Park. All riders should be prepared to ride safely and legally and helmets are required. Courtesy photo Gerber School is kicking off the 2013-2014 school year with a new fence mural that was sponsored and partially funded by the Tehama County Arts Council and the California Arts Council Arts Plate Program. The motto at Gerber School is Achieving Excellence. Students live up to this motto by having a No Excuses attitude in character and work habits. The hallways and classrooms are full of powerful college symbolism, which gets kids thinking about their future and setting goals for themselves as early as kindergarten. This year the school wanted to expand the symbolism on campus to show students and the community of Gerber the pride in the school and what it stands for. The staff is very grateful to both the Tehama County Arts Council and the California Arts Council Arts Plate Program for their participation in making this project a reality.
