Nicole Suave, a 16-year-old Red Bluff Union High School junior, earned the Miss Tehama County title in front of a bevy of onlookers. Contestants also included Sherrie Bell, 20, of Corning, Monica Decasper, 17, of Corning, and Kayla McCoshum, 17, of Red Bluff. The Little Miss Tehama County contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Kerstiens Stage at the Tehama District Fairground. The Tehama County Board of Supervisors began the exploratory process Tuesday of a plan that would refinance around $6.5 million in county debt and raise potentially $15 million more for capital improvement projects. The county has an outstanding debt of around $6.5 million in Certificates of Participation bonds it took out in 1998 and 2002. Those bonds helped pay for remodels of the jail, juvenile hall and Social Services building. About $1.8 million of the available principal on the loans had not been expended. Even with that money along with another $2.3 million remaining from the county's tobacco settlement fund, county officials believe they will still need to raise between $3.8 and $6.8 million more to pay for a series of building projects in the coming years. Those projects are largely centered around relocating the Probation Department's Day Reporting Center, which is being forced from its Walnut Street location by the move of the Tehama County Superior Court. Call 527-2151, Ext. 112 CHICO — Bearded best-buddies Brandon Squyres and Adam Switzer are used to getting attention. Their facial hair and long manly manes often merit a second glance, but may get worse after Sunday's season premiere of the "Amazing Race" on TV. The childhood friends from Chico were one of 11 teams that recently sprinted around the globe for a chance to win $1 million in the CBS reality show. "You get to see so many places that we never would have seen on our own," Switzer said. "We got to see stuff we longed to do." They started the competition at the historic Melody Ranch in California, but viewers have to tune in to learn their final destination. To protect the show's integrity, Squyres and Switzer cannot disclose their favorite filming locations or craziest challenges until the finale, but they are happy to talk about the experience overall. "It's a lot harder than watching it from your couch," Squyres said. "The race is for real." Teams often were fighting and "flipping out" over minor details as they traversed four continents and nine countries, Squyres and Switzer said. But their adventure was smooth sailing.
