Five reasons to Kick Up Your Heels at the Tehama District Fair By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Walking around outside, the sights, sounds and smells of the Tehama District Fair can easily distract you from all of the neat stuff inside the exhibition buildings. In keeping with the fair's theme of "Kick Up Your Heels" here's five things I found made me kick up mine. • The "Main Street Panorama Quilt" is a must-see Best of Show piece located front and center in the cafeteria. Nine quilters each made a quilt depicting a downtown business on Main Street in Red Bluff. The level of detail leaves you thinking you're standing on Main Street itself. The quilters were Mary Alix Perkin, Marjorie McGraw, Vikki Bettman, Patricia Christ, Frances Galantine, Roxanna Bradley, Vivian Roop, Natalie Larson and Rhonda Jackson. They used a panoramic photo taken by Bob McConnell, which Bruce Perkin then scaled so each quilt could have precise dimensions to align the sidewalks, curb and building fronts with each other. • Over in half of the cafeteria building is the Tehama Trail Marketplace. A wonderful showing of some of the best products the county has to offer. But my heels kicked up when I saw one of my favorite picture opportunities — a boy and girl cow face cutout. Have the kids stick their faces in for a fun photograph to remember the fair by or kick your heels back yourself, have some fun and climb into the thing. • Speaking of the children, take a gander of the future artists of Tehama County over in the Junior Art Building. If you don't have children of your own, this is your chance to reminiscence about all the creativity, messiness and vibrant colors of finger painting. Although it's not just the little ones' artwork that is shown, there's some promising talent in the exhibition as well. There's also some creative pieces, like my favorite, a Lego art sculpture made by Corning's Savannah Hopping. It depicts a courtroom trial scene, complete with the bad guy getting arrested. • Don't know the difference between a blue gill and a sun perch? Head on over to the Floriculture building, where Mt. Lassen Trout Farm has a fish exhibit showing real life species of seven different fish. Don't worry about any fishy smell as the room is shared with the floral exhibits. • In keeping with the fair theme, make sure to see Kari Goree's decorated strawbell depicting a life size account of this year's fair logo. It's located in the Arts and Crafts building and was one of the first items I saw as I started my trip around the fair. It'll put you in the mood to open your eyes and discover for yourself all the amazing work done in Tehama County in the past year.
