2A – Daily News – Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Community people&events Derk - Bernard Young Marines raise suicide awareness The Tehama County Young Marines of the Marine Corps League detachment 1140 were on the TV news Wednes- day night. The group partnered with the Amer- ican Foundation for Sui- cide Prevention (AFSP) to lead the opening cere- monies of the Out of the Darkness Chico Walk at Bidwell Park on Satur- day, Oct. 16, which was covered by KHSL Chan- nel 12. At the invitation of Jon-Paul Bernard of San Diego and Yvonne Marie Derk of Red Bluff were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, in Fallbrook by the Rev. Christopher Tuttle. A reception was held at Los Willows in Fallbrook. Elyse Korhummel served as maid of honor and Keith Mogg was the best man. Bridesmaids were Heidi Mattison; Amanda Wigno; Olga Bronikova and sister of the groom, Mallory Lussenden. Ushers were brother of the groom, Thomas Lussenden; Nick Alesi, Eugene Peskiou and Chris Smith. The bride, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David B. Derk of Red Bluff, is a 2004 Red Bluff Union High School and a 2008 San Diego State University gradu- ate. She is completeing her Masters Degree at The George Washington University in Washington D.C. The groom, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Strickland of Escondido and Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Bernard of Grand Rapids, is a 1999 Union High School and a 2010 Uni- versity of California, San Diego graduate. He is com- pleteing a Masters Degree at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. The couple honeymooned in China and will live in the Washington D.C. area. Setting it straight An item in Monday’s police reports requires clar- ification. A car purchased by Hess Brothers Auto Dismantling was later found to be reported as stolen. Event Co-Chairman Mike Gonzales, the Young Marines present- ed colors and led the crowd of more than 310 walkers in the Pledge of Allegiance, including Rep. Wally Herger, who also spoke at the event. The Young Marines team was #10 out of 20 in raising donations to help increase national awareness about depres- sion and suicide, advo- cate for mental health issues, and assist sur- vivors of suicide loss. The event provided exposure to the issue, and netted more than $12,000 in donations. The Young Marines team walked the 3-mile course and manned a table providing informa- tion on the Young Marines program to edu- cate young people about the dangers of drugs, tobacco, alcohol and gangs. Other booths rep- resented California State University, Chico coun- seling, Butte County Mental Health and Suzy's law, an organiza- tion named after the daughter of Mike and Mary Gonzales. Suzy's Law is dedicat- ed to passing legislation that would make it illegal to encourage someone online in taking their own life. Teen suicide is a leading cause of death for young people. Richfield Center Has Interesting Meeting The Richfield Farm Center held an interesting meeting last evening at the Richfield school house, although manyof the Farm Bureau members were unable to attend. A.W. Lee, President of the Squaw Hill center, and C.J. Koopman, State Director, addressed the meeting and pointed out the importance of the Farm Bureau movement. Henry named Student of the Month by Rotary Courtesy photo Clarissa Henry of Red Bluff Union High School was chosen by the Red Bluff Rotary Club to receive the honor of student of the month for October. Picture, from left, are County Superintendent Larry Champion, Clarissa Henry and Jenny Lynn Svejda. Henry is noted by her teachers as being an extremely hard worker who is sure to achieve excellence in everything she does. She is involved in numerous service projects and is a member of the basketball team. She is looking forward to pursuing a career in graphic design or animal science upon graduation.
