In addition, the recent government shutdown delayed federal funding for programs that help families pay for utilities. As a result, many people are feeling burdened by the cost of heat and light in their homes. You may find some relief with these ways to save. IDEAS FOR SAVING NOW › Turn off the lights in your house whenever you can. Walk around occasionally to ensure lights are not on in empty rooms. › Turn down the thermostat and your water heater temperature. Heat is one of the highest energy expenses in most homes. › Avoid using your appliances more than necessary. Cook multiple dishes in the oven at once, try using the microwave instead, and run the dishwasher only when it's full. › Unplug electronics that you're not using. › Wash your clothes in cold water. IDEAS FOR INVESTING IN FUTURE SAVINGS › Purchase an advanced power strip.
