E ven though he was an out-of-state student who only knew a few other students, David Weaver, AΦ986 found his place at Alabama with Lambda Chi Alpha. Alpha-Phi Zeta not only welcomed him but helped to open doors for leadership opportunities and lifelong bonds that played a large role in David's personal growth. Lambda Chi Memories David went through open recruitment to understand his best options and met Greg Greene, AΦ912 and Mike Perkins, AΦ916 at the Alpha-Phi Zeta house. "Their encouragement and introduction to members (and a few prospective associates) made it an easy decision—it just felt right." Alpha-Phi Zeta brothers enjoyed UA's vibrant Greek life atmosphere. Beyond memorable social experiences, David made the most of his time in the Chapter House by serving as little sister coordinator, social chairman, and Chapter president. "Learning to overcome adversity among and between good friends with a diverse group of interests and persuade positive action definitely helped prepare me to be both a lobbyist and manager of people in the corporate world." Career Ventures After law school, David went on to work for five different Fortune 500 companies throughout his 37-year career. During that time, he provided political, regulatory, and environmental services and leadership. "I grew from working alone to leading a team of more than 65 individuals and outside lawyers/contractors," he said. David retired as senior vice president of external strategy and environmental affairs for Southern Company Gas in 2023. His career involved working on issues with three administrations in Washington, D.C., and recovering more than $10 billion in capital investments for his utility clients. Lasting Connections Looking back on his college years, David is grateful for the life path he found through Lambda Chi Alpha membership. He remains connected with a core group of Alpha-Phi Zeta alumni through social media, Alabama football games, and in-person gatherings whenever possible. For today's collegians, David encourages them to embrace their Fraternity experience and strike a balance where football weekends, swaps, and classroom time lead to productive academic careers. He also suggests that success starts with offering one's best to others and looking for the best in others, whether in one's work or personal life. "Learning is better achieved when done in-person among humans interacting with one another, so go to class! For graduates and those about to graduate, opportunities will always exist for individuals who want to work hard, be creative, find real solutions to problems, and seek to make their community better." David and his wife of 41 years, Connie, met through a blind date arranged by Fraternity brothers and little sisters, principally Thomas Ed Lawhon, AΦ967. They have one son who is a graduate of West Point currently serving in the U.S. Army as a captain for the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
