A
few years ago, Joe Gugliemino '83 was
browsing eBay and happened upon a
President's Key from the 'Ol Epsilon. ese keys
(or pins) are typically presented annually by
the Chapter to the president to recognize them
for their service. e key Joe discovered was
presented in 1934 to the President of eta Chi
Epsilon Chapter, William Edward Burpee '34.
Joe quickly bought the key and gave it to his
Little Brother, Jim Melvin '85, who was EBA
President at the time. Recently, Jim presented
the key to the Chapter for proper safekeeping
and recognition as an important artifact in the
fraternity's history.
Some 91 years after William's presidency, his
President's Key has finally made its way back
to Epsilon to honor his legacy in the Chapter.
e key will be stored with many of the other
important Epsilon artifacts in the display case in
the alumni room. Shown below is an excerpt from
the 1934 yearbook of William Burpee's senior
blurb and two pictures of the key itself. e next
time you visit the Chapter House, be sure to
check it out.
