Pi Kappa Alpha P ike leader Zach Schaefer '22 will soon commission into the U.S. Marine Corps with the goal of becoming a Marine Aviator. Zach, a May graduate with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, was deeply involved in Beta Mu, serving as philanthropy chairman and sergeant-at- arms. He was also active in the Phi Gamma Nu Business Fraternity and represented PIKE as a Silver Spur beginning in 2023. Throughout his time at UT Austin, Zach also rose through the ranks of the UT Naval ROTC Battalion, ultimately serving as Battalion Commander of the unit. Originally from Laredo, Zach said he'll miss Austin. He will start at The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia, where all newly commissioned Marine officers receive foundational training. "Following graduation, TBS will be an essential foundation, preparing me to lead Marines and reinforcing the core values of leadership, discipline and adaptability," he explained. "Upon completing TBS, I will attend Flight School in Pensacola, Florida, where I will work toward my goal of flying the F-35 Lightning." Becoming a Marine pilot is more than just a career aspiration for Zach—it represents a lifelong commitment to service, excellence and the pursuit of something greater than himself. "The path ahead will be challenging, but I am eager to take on the responsibility, push myself to new limits and earn the privilege of serving my country alongside my fellow Marines." Zach speaks highly of his Beta Mu experience. "I chose PIKE because of the people," he said. "During rush, I visited a lot of different fraternities, but PIKE stood out to me. The brothers I met were not only welcoming but also genuinely impressive in their own ways—driven, supportive and always ready to have a good time. From the beginning, I felt like I belonged, and that feeling has only grown stronger over time. Some of my closest friendships have come from this fraternity, and I don't take that for granted." One of his favorite memories came during the 2023 Texas vs. OU Weekend in Dallas. "Spending time with my brothers, being part of the energy and excitement and watching the Longhorns dominate Oklahoma with a 49-0 victory was an unforgettable experience. Looking back, it's memories like these that remind me why I chose PIKE in the first place." Beta Mu President Jacob Sedlacek '23 reports Zach is a highly respected brother. "Zach has been a tremendous asset to our chapter and executive council this past year," he said. "His commitment to enforcing new policies and shaping a stronger vision for our chapter has left a lasting impact." As Zach embarks on his new journey with the U.S. Marine Corps, his brothers have no doubt he will continue to excel and push the boundaries. Thank you for your many contributions to Beta Mu, Zach, and Godspeed in the days ahead!
