Nick Maschinski '05 Believes in the Brotherhood ILLINOIS BETA CHAPTER ΣAE wasn't the only fraternity that Nick Maschinski '05 considered as a freshman, but he knows to this day he made the right choice. Nick and his high school best friend, Jason Hendry '05, were invited to visit by Jason's older brother Jeff '02. This enabled them to meet a group of genuine, diverse brothers while learning about the chapter's strong history. "It didn't hurt that a bunch of our pledge brothers were from the same hometown—the Schaumburg crew." Nick and his brothers always had something fun to do together. On spring break in 2005, his group came home early from their Panama City Beach trip to watch the men's basketball team beat Arizona with a comeback win and lights-out shooting from Deron Williams. During Nick's term as house manager, he received the Phi Alpha award (and his own bedroom choice) for fixing the second-floor water fountain. ("That was a pleasant surprise; I just figured it was part of my job!") Growing as Friends and Leaders Nick Maschinski '05 with a Barbary macaque on his shoulder outside of St. Michael's Cave in Gibraltar. Those years with Illinois Beta taught Nick many lessons in leadership. "Taking ownership and being accountable for your actions is a huge part of becoming a trustworthy person," he said. "Our situation was less than ideal at times, but we made the best of it; I always look back on it fondly." Currently, Nick is back in the Chicago suburbs after living in Seattle for four years. He's worked eight years for Amazon in the transportation and logistics area. As a UX designer, he builds mobile and web apps to support the company's middle mile truckers and last mile delivery drivers. Nick enjoys boating on the Fox River and cooking barbecue in his free time as well as fixing up his ever- aging mid-century modern home. He also goes out for an annual steak dinner with Terry Naughton '05, Matt Wnek '05, Matt Thunander '05, Phil Pacete '05, and Tony Basilios '05. Nick and his wife spend lots of time traveling (including a Japan trip coming up in May) and hanging out with their dog, Nala. WANT TO CATCH UP? Hit Nick up at nick@maschinski.com.
