House Corporation President Mark Easler '86 displays the donated photographs alongside the UI archivist. P reserving history is not just about keeping artifacts, it's about safeguarding the stories they tell. Thanks to a generous contribution from Richard Stutsman of Malibu, California, we can connect with our past in a truly special way. Mr. Stutsman reached out last year regarding two historic photographs of Iowa Alpha Chapter, taken in what we believe to be 1894 and 1896. Among the faces in the 1896 image, he believes, is his grandfather, Carl Allen Stutsman 1887. These photographs— survivors of time and circumstance—have an even deeper significance given that Mr. Stutsman lost many family possessions in the devastating Woolsey Fire of 2018. By sheer luck, these irreplaceable pieces of Fraternity history had been stored elsewhere. Recognizing their importance, Mr. Stutsman chose to pass them along, ensuring their preservation and appreciation within our archives. Though the names of most men in the images remain a mystery, these photos serve as a tangible link to an era that laid the foundation for our brotherhood as we know it today. As we continue to honor Brothers who came before us, paving the way for our success and building the bonds of brotherhood we continue to enjoy today, contributions like these remind us that our experience is wider than our four years on campus. These relics connect us to the men who came before us and illustrate the legacy we leave for future generations. The Fraternity extends its deepest gratitude to Mr. Stutsman for entrusting us with this meaningful piece of history. These photographs will be preserved in the UI Archives, with replicas displayed at the Chapter House with the honor they deserve. Iowa Alpha Brothers in 1894 (left) and 1896 (right).
