page 2 Wolverine Sig I n addition to the benefits of brotherhood that our members enjoy, we wanted to highlight some other ways Sigma Chi supports students who choose to join our organization. REWARDING OUR BROTHERS The first is scholarships. On the local level, we continue to benefit from the Coon/Kirby Theta Theta Scholarship Fund. Each term, we work with the undergraduate scholarship chairman to award $2,500 directed by them to deserving brothers. Sigma Chi International also provides a great number of scholarship opportunities, and last year alone awarded $423,500 in scholarships across the country, including $2,500 to Theta Theta members. DEVELOPING YOUNG LEADERS The second is leadership training. Each year, our members can step into leadership roles and learn critical life skills on top of their education. The consul is the point of contact with the House Corporation and the International Fraternity for any questions and concerns we have about Chapter activities. Our quaestor handles an annual budget of over $500,000. We all remember our magister and their role in bringing us together as a pledge class and guiding us through the Norman Shield. The recruitment chairman designs a program that gives our Chapter the best opportunity to add great candidates to our rolls. The house manager works directly with the House Corporation and our property manager to keep everything working and safe. The ritual chairman manages all the moving parts to a quality investiture. And, of course, there are more. The opportunity to take on a leadership role and contribute to the experiences of others is a valuable aspect of Chapter membership. KTLW PARTICIPATION Our International Fraternity also directly supports leadership training. Each summer, select members of all Chapters are invited to participate in the Krach Transformational Leaders Workshop, created by former Grand Consul Keith Krach, Purdue '79. Some of us old timers will remember a prior version known as LTW. The four-day event "focuses on the personal and professional development of Sigma Chi undergraduates, developing them into Transformational Leaders in their chapters and on their campuses." We have had tremendous feedback from the undergraduate attendees over the years about its personal and professional impact. We'll highlight other benefits of joining Sigma Chi in future articles. You can recommend candidates for our Chapter at thetatheta.com. Recruitment typically occurs mid-to-late September and again in mid- to-late January. You can learn more about the Sigma Chi Leadership Institute and KTLW at sigmachi.org. Scholarship and Leadership Opportunities W e recently lost a brother who had made generous contributions to the House Corporation and our Chapter. Dick Swaney '69 passed away on March 1, 2025. His full obituary can be found on the Dykstra Funeral Home of Holland website. Dick was on the House Corporation when his son, Patrick '02, joined Theta Theta. He was a thoughtful, upbeat, and caring man and a great example of what Sigma Chi is all about for our undergraduates and board. We thank him for his efforts on behalf of our Chapter and for the great support his brother Bill '60 has provided. On behalf of the current House Corporation members that worked directly with Dick, we want to express our feeling of fortune to have gotten to know him and condolences to the Swaney family for their loss. All honor to his name. In Hoc, Rick Miller '82 Dave Train '84 Dan Page '87 Jerry Kocis '94 P.S. A group of brothers from Dick's era are planning to reconnect in Ann Arbor this September. The House Corporation will work with Elmo Morales '68 to help coordinate the activities. More details to follow. REMEMBERING RICHARD SWANEY '69 From left: Dick Swaney '69, Bill Swaney '60, and Don Lindow '70 gather for the Chapter House's 100th anniversary celebration.
