THE TOMAHAWK 4 Alpha Mu Chapter A s the new Alumni Corporation Board president, Dave Matulac '93 has big shoes to fill for Alpha Mu Chapter� He is honored to succeed the leadership of former President Ted Hovda '73 and help Theta Chi's bright young members thrive at Iowa State� CONNECTING WITH BROTHERS "When I think of my college experience, the majority of memories have to do with Theta Chi and what a positive experience it had been," Dave said� He joined largely because of older brother J.R. '89, and how welcoming and friendly the other members were when he visited the chapter house and other summer recruitment events� Dave was proud to be amongst members who put their best foot forward for the university and community� Dave fondly remembers serenading sororities for social event partners, complete with an entire Alpha Mu band and choreographed dance� Practicing for serenades was hard work, but he enjoyed the process with his brothers� As chapter president and secretary, he gained valuable insight in how to collaborate with others and navigate differing viewpoints� Dave developed a deep respect for his Theta Chi peers, and he encourages today's undergraduates to take opportunities for involvement with chapter operations or university organizations� LIFE BEYOND COLLEGE Dave began working for the Iowa Department of Transportation after graduating in 1993� His first 12 years were spent in the Office of Road Design, and he has been in the Traffic Engineering Section of the Traffic and Safety Bureau for the past 19 years� Alongside his professional career, Dave is currently in his second stint with Alpha Mu's Alumni Corporation Board� He originally joined and served from 1996-2004, and he has been with the board again since 2019� "I would not be the person I am today without what I've learned and gained from Theta Chi� It's always been important to give back to those that have helped me along the way�" ELEVATING HIS ENGAGEMENT Following Ted Hovda's departure from the board after more than 40 years of service, Dave was humbled to be elected as the new president� Ted's George T� Kilavos Award (see page 5) speaks volumes of his devotion to Theta Chi, and the board is grateful for his decades of fraternal devotion� Dave has high hopes for the current undergraduate chapter and how the Alumni Corporation Board can help them succeed at Iowa State� He urges fellow alumni to get involved by reaching out to a member and sharing wisdom on their college experiences� "It's interesting how much being a college student has changed, even in the last 10 years� This may spark ideas of how we, as alumni, can make a difference for current and future members�" In his personal life, Dave lives in Ames and enjoys spending time with his two daughters whenever he can� One is an Iowa State graduate working with Principal Financial in Des Moines, while the other is a sophomore at Iowa State studying interior design� Dave also likes to golf and keep up with Iowa State athletics� "I am very optimistic about Alpha Mu and the current undergraduate leadership."
