TA U K A P PA E P S I L O N E P S I L O N C H A P T E R I O W A S TAT E U N I V E R S I T Y S P R I N G 2 0 2 5 THE CHIMES S ince the fall of 1946, several Fraters have held the title of Chapter advisor at Epsilon Chapter. The Chapter advisor is a powerful yet secret weapon. He is the unsung hero who attends the occasional Chapter meeting, guides the newly installed undergraduate cabinet each year, counsels the prytanis, and provides a steady hand whenever and wherever needed. The Chapter advisor takes the late-night phone calls and weighs in on critical matters with limited notice, often during family dinners or from the sidelines of their kid's soccer game. Millard R. "Spike" Kratochvil held the role of Chapter advisor for 38 straight years, from 1946-84. I followed Spike and served in that role for many years. Let's not forget Chapter advisor roles from Fraters Brad Williams '78 E-1287, Eric Bidwell '96 E-1804, Matt Kronlage '04 E-1994, and Dave Overman '06 E-2020. Epsilon's success over the years stretches from Kratochvil to Overman. We are a better Chapter for their collective dedicated leadership. Thank you to all of them. A new day has dawned at Epsilon. I will be stepping down from all undergraduate responsibilities this summer, and loyal Frater Eric Davis '18 E-2331 will help organize a new alumni cabinet. Eric is a vocational agriculture and industrial arts teacher and a native of Gilbert, Iowa. He brings passion, dedication, and a deep belief in TKE's mission: to aid men in their mental, moral, and social development—for life. With this transition, I will step back from all undergraduate responsibilities while continuing to serve as Chapter historian and fundraising officer. I will remain responsible for our bi-annual Chimes newsletters as well as Epsilon Chapter's fundraising efforts. After 40 years of undergraduate advising responsibilities, I feel it is time to pass the torch. Frater Bill Schaphorst '79 E-1327 will continue managing the annual TKE Homecoming celebration we all enjoy. Looking ahead, there is an opportunity for additional alumni to join in supporting Epsilon Chapter. Frater Matt Burrell '01 E-1924 is also retiring as Epsilon Chapter Housing Corporation chairman, and Frater Mason Ohnemus '17 E-2304 will step into this vital leadership role. Matt followed in the footsteps of Fraters Gary Kounkel '58 E-645, Gary Mulhall '63 E-802, and Mike Beals '07 E-2051, each of whom faithfully oversaw the management of 224 Ash financials during their tenures. Additionally, Frater Dan Schmidt '75 E-1197 is retiring as alumni maintenance advisor after an incredible 44 years of service. Dan is now focusing his time and resources on fighting the cancer that has paid him a visit (see his story on page 4). We are seeking a Frater who can step in to fulfill Dan's legacy in this important role. With these changes, we are looking for volunteers. Meetings are remotely held. Feel free to reach out to Eric Davis or me for more information. Yours in the Bond, Roger C. Underwood '76 E-1239 Epsilon's Alumni Historian Volunteers Needed! ALUMNI BOARD OF ADVISORS The board consists of the Chapter advisor, Chapter prytanis, Chapter crysophylos, and at least four others who provide education and guidance to Epsilon Chapter. EPSILON CHAPTER HOUSING CORPORATION The corporation serves as the landlord of 224 Ash and is responsible for general maintenance and operations of the facility. Our Chapter is incredibly grateful to have such generous and caring alumni who provide scholarships for our members. Changing of Epsilon's Guard
