B rother Doneal Gersh, ∆∆949 says of his days at Penn State: "I majored in Sigma Nu Fraternity, Nittany Lions football, and Broadcast Journalism, in that order. I walked- on my junior year and was a linebacker for 45 minutes but wasn't big enough. I spent one day as a tight end but was too small. I had one day as a wide receiver but had no hands or speed. I then proved to Coach Paterno that I was a 'good' center. We went to Cotton Bowl after the '71 season." Brother Gersh received a BS degree in broadcast journalism from PSU in 1972, received an MA in business management from Central Michigan University in 1979, and completed the USAF Advanced Public Affairs program at the University of Oklahoma in 1983. He received a regular Army commission in the infantry. He graduated from Infantry Officers Basic and Airborne schools (1972) and Ranger Course (1973). After a variety of assignments, he was finally able to do what he always wanted to in the Army: attend a Dept. of Defense Public Affairs (Relations) Officers Course. For the next 13 years he was a Public Affairs Officer. He served as senior Army technical adviser for Irwin Yablans' film, Tank, in 1984. It starred James Garner, Shirley Jones, C. Thomas Howell, G. D. Spradlin, and James Cromwell. His wife, Debbie, gave a very convincing performance as "Crying Mother" in the infirmary scene! Don retired with the rank of colonel (O6) in 1994 after 22 years of service. As a second career, he was the Director of University Relations at Pembroke State University/ University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Later, he was a real estate agent and a public relations consultant. Don was honored on the field at Beaver Stadium as part of Military Appreciation Day in 2024. Don and Debbie have four sons and three grandsons and live in Fayetteville, N.C. B rother Nelson hosts a BYOB tailgate for every home game that begins approximately four hours before kickoff.
