THE INDIANA GRAM G rowing up as an introvert and being the first of his family to attend college, Steve Mitchell '83 found an environment for personal growth in Indiana Gamma Chapter. Today, he remains devoted to helping Sigma Alpha Epsilon provide young men with similar opportunities to thrive. BECOMING A LEADER Steve balanced fun times with brothers and dutiful chapter service during his undergraduate years. Serving as eminent deputy archon and eminent archon provided him with chances to grow as a leader while communicating with a large group and learning to hold himself accountable for organizational decisions. "Guys from my high school that I had a lot of respect for were in the house," Steve said, recognizing Brothers Steve Dreyer '81, Mike Lawrence '81, Kurt Mathewson '81, John Pulliam '81, Bill Vissing '81, and Dan Aron '83. "It was like a four-year movie where nearly every scene was memorable in terms of a new experience or getting to know people better; both in good and tough times." STAYING TRUE TO ΣAE After college, Steve earned his MBA and spent 30 years in senior leadership roles with AT&T while raising two daughters. He also remained involved with Indiana Gamma by joining the House Corporation during the chapter house's construction. Steve Mitchell '83 on Indiana Gamma Experiences, Supporting ΣΑΕ A Bright Fraternal Future Our commitment to accountability is reflected in the establishment of a stricter standards board, educational modules for all members, and a focus on cultivating a culture of brotherhood and positive campus involvement. Additionally, we have maintained strong relationships with the chapter coach and the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life through weekly meetings, and we are determined to improve our compliance with the university's expectations. ΣΑΕ also proudly demonstrated our commitment to philanthropy with efforts spearheaded by Max Prince '27 and Lincoln Patterson '26. We partnered with the National Marrow Donor Program to organize bone marrow drives, leading to nearly 100 individuals signing up for DNA swabs to aid in life-saving matches. We also participated in the Indiana University Dance Marathon and raised $2,275 for Riley Children's Hospital. Furthermore, ΣΑΕ placed third out of all chapters on campus for the Crimson Cupboard food drive, which helps students, staff, and faculty struggling with food insecurity. Through our efforts in philanthropy, campus involvement, and brotherhood, we continue to embody the principles of the True Gentleman. Our chapter remains dedicated to enhancing our reputation and achieving our key goals of fostering a culture of accountability, improving our academic standing, and expanding our philanthropic impact. Real change doesn't happen overnight, but with the support of our alumni and ΣΑΕ National Fraternity Chapter Services, we look forward to our chapter's resilience and ability to build upon these successes in the spring semester.
