THE LION TATTLER T his fall has been a good one for the brothers of Illinois Beta, filled with fun events and philanthropy. Social Chairman Elliot Casey '27 has done a great job organizing events, including football watch parties and get-togethers with sororities. New Member Educator Scott Wolter '27 has been working hard teaching our 36 new members what it means to be a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon—and how to be True Gentlemen. We've also participated in several sorority philanthropies this fall. Brothers attended and donated to KAT's Theta Hoops, a casual tournament and social event to support CASA. We also joined DG's Anchor Bowl football tournament and Tri Delta's softball tournament, the latter raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We enjoyed playing for a good cause and dominating the competition as ΣAE came in O n Friday, September 13, on a beautiful Urbana morning, 77 alumni from across the USA hit the links at the Atkins Golf Club. This was the 42nd consecutive Phi Alpha Golf Outing, kicking off the 125th Illinois Beta anniversary celebration weekend. Brothers chose to participate in either the Championship or Scramble Flights. Brother Tim Petry '81 won the Championship Flight with a magnificent even par round of 72. Last year's champion, Brother Gregg Fred Werner '77, shot an outstanding round of 75 and ceremoniously bestowed the coveted PAGO "Blue Jacket" to Brother Petry at the awards luncheon. The foursome of Tim Fitz '96, Bo Lewke '96, Derek Perkins '96, and Christopher Hemans '97 won the Scramble Flight with an 8 under par round of 64. The foursome of Michael Charpentier '90, Scott Welsh '94, Karl Kochendorfer '94, and Greg Levine '95.5 won the Peoria Handicap award with a blistering net round of 61 (73 gross). Finally, since we are all honorable "True Gentlemen," the threesome of Alex Whamond '00, Angel Grajeda '00.5, and Walt Oestmann '01 won the award for "Most Honest Golfers" with a round of 75. There were also awards for Longest Drive, Longest Putt, and Closest to the Pin (sorry not to mention names, but you know who you are). PAGO 2024 had the largest attendance ever! Brothers who haven't seen one another in years (decades) brought back memories and shared experiences, all in recognition of our beloved order, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After gathering for a group photo, brothers formed a circle and sang our brotherhood song, "Friends." Oh, what a wonderful day! Many thanks to the staff at Atkins Golf Club and the brothers of the PAGO Planning Committee for such a superlative event! Save the date for PAGO 2025, scheduled for September 12, 2025. Phi Alpha! first place during the softball tournament; we also performed well in Anchor Bowl. For UIUC's Dad's Weekend in November, brothers organized a family brunch at the chapter house, a tailgate for the Illini football game, and an evening get-together in the courtyard. It was wonderful, as always, to share the bonds of brotherhood with our families. We look to end this semester on a good note, with more fun events and philanthropy to come in 2025. If you know any new or incoming students who could be great ΣAE, we'd love to hear from you! Please reach out to me to discuss.
